The final disc in the package is the video footage taken live at the Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland on 21st November 1977 mixed to 16/48 stereo LPCM and 5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital surround by Jakko Jakszyk. This footage has never been publicly seen before. The concert venue was the home for Washington Wizards basketball team, then known as Washington Bullets – so the video footage comes directly from the film that was played to the big screens in the venue during the show and has since been seen nowhere else.”
I read somewhere that there are rights issues over the Sight and Sound material. Huge shame, but fairly readily available i suppose.
Thanks Colin. Weirdly it’s now showing in my AW feed. God knows! Good discussion on SHF. Lots of controversy about tracks that might be duplicates or belong to other eras (Strip Cartoon, One Brown Mouse). Personally, I’d love to have heard an acapella title track. Like the one IA used live, while the band mimed along…
I’d always associated ‘Strip Cartoon’ with the ‘Too Old To R’n’R’ era myself, but as the multiple mixes and uses of the singles in and around Stand Up and Benefit (featured in numerous permutations on the deluxe editions of both those albums) attest, you might as well stick them on both…
There was another non-album single from the late 70s wasn’t there, available in single versions of different lengths (or am I thinking of Strip Cartoon)?
JETHRO TULL – SONGS FROM THE WOOD 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
· Jethro Tull’s tenth studio album set for deluxe reissue by Parlophone Records on May 19th 2017
· 3 CD, 2 DVD and 96 page book deluxe package
· Including the original album remixed by Steven Wilson
· A host of unreleased associated recordings and live tracks
· DVD components featuring a live concert, HD audio and 5.1 mixes
Jethro Tull’s tenth album was inspired by Ian Anderson’s departure to a more rural environment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside.
Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and it is perceived today as one of the band’s most popular albums. Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds “Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!”, while guitarist Martin Barre remembers that “It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had… I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree”.
On May 19th 2017, Parlophone Records will be releasing the long awaited “Country Set”, the deluxe version of Songs From The Wood.
The first disc of the set contains the Steven Wilson remix of the original studio album, accompanied by associated recordings. This includes the tracks “Old Aces Die Hard” and “Working John, Working Joe” which are being released here for the first time on any format. “Old Aces Die Hard”, a title Ian Anderson recently gave the track in a subtle nod to Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, is, according to Ian “an extraordinary find, because it’s a long piece, and quite evolved, and one that sounds like it is pretty much complete – it doesn’t sound as if it was waiting for me or anyone else in the band to go back and redo vocals or guitars or whatever.”
CDs 2 and 3 in the box form 22 track live tracks, recorded on the Songs From The Wood Tour across two dates, Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA on 6th December 1977 and Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland, USA on 21st November 1977. These tracks have been reconstructed as a complete set and then remixed to stereo by Jakko Jakszyk and are completely unheard.
DVD 1 contains 5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital Stereo Surround and 96/24 LPCM stereo versions of the original and Steven Wilson remixed album along with selected associated tracks, as well as various quad mixes and flat transfers.
The concert venue was the home for Washington Wizards basketball team, then known as Washington Bullets – so the video footage comes directly from the film that was played to the big screens in the venue during the show and has since been seen nowhere else.
Completing the set is a beautiful 96 page book which contains extensive writing on the history of the album and how it came to be. Martin Webb reflects on the writing, recording and touring of the album whilst Ian Anderson gives a track by track annotation of the album and associated recordings. Alongside lyrics, there’s an interview with assistant engineer Trevor White, relevant photos and imagery and a full recording and touring chronology.
Vinyl, digital, and breakout standalone CD versions of the Steven Wilson remix will follow in July.

Seems a bargain at £19.99. I’ve heard lots of Tull, but SFTW is the only one I’ve ever owned. Duly pre-ordered from Burning Two-Sheds. If Mr Wilson has done as good a job as the XTC’s, its going to be excellent.
Really looking forward to this one. Working John, Working Joe appeared later on though, didn’t it? On A perhaps? Still, this is the bollocks. And Heavy Horses & Stormwatch to come, over the next couple of years.
A indeed. Smothered in Ian’s over-loud under harmonies. It can only be better.
I wish the Steven Wilson treatment would also be applied to Broadsword – a great album, a ton of extra material, some great live material and boy could those drums do with remixing.
I’d say B&TB was the last great one – IMO. Though I have a soft spot for two or three of the songs on ‘Under Wraps’ (but not the production). It was largely game over for me by ‘Crest…’ – much as I willed it not to be (having only come in at B&TB and the Living In The Past comp plus a reissue of Aqualung).
I know what you mean. There’s an 80s vibe which I dislike, but I love “Farm on the freeway”, “Budapest” and “She said she was a dancer” plus the rest is perfectly listenable. Not Top Tull but given the ghastly era it survives quite well.
He’s always been really proud of Budapest for some reason. That and “She Said She Was a Dancer” always jarred, like an old man perving over a young woman. And not in a good way.
The best song on that album for me is Farm, but then i struggle to care for the sentiment – if you’re that rich, just but another frigging farm!
Mind you, in Dancer the story is quite complex – they are both playing games and he sees it and takes himself off to bed on his own. I hear it more as about regret than lust.
I wonder how Shona feels about those songs. Or the outtakes “Did i mention I’m Married”, “Don’t Touch (the Flute)” and “Best Pop Your School Uniform Back On Luv”
The whole Crest album had a bit too much of a Dire Straits feel about it, although it’s perfectly listenable.
Broadsword is a much underrated album – but going back to this set, £20 for 3 cds, 2 dvds and a 96 page book is fantastic value, and it does make you wonder how they make anything on it when you take out manufacturing costs, VAT etc – not that Bargepole is complaining!
I went to see them in Manchester on that tour, taking a chum who I’d talked into coming to what I assured him would be a brilliant live show. At the end he turned to me and said “So are they copying Dire Straits or did Dire Straits copy them?” I’m led to believe that they were making a deliberate point anent the latter but if so it was one that many listeners missed.
On the other hand, Said She Was a Dancer was about the only Tull song that Mrs Cakes liked, so I have a soft spot for it for that reason.
I think we can all agree that this is how re-issues should be done, in terms of both quality and price. It feels like somebody has treated both the music and the fans like they matter.
Agree wholeheartedly. I don’t even begrudge them the many many re-releases I’ve shelled out for over the years. The box sets are superb. It’s sad not to have John Evans’ perspective and the 1975 gig wasn’t particularly well mixed, but what a treasure trove.
Ooooh!
This is one of my Top 5 albums and I want this badly.
Not available on the Amazon link on the Tull website but preordered from Burning Shed.
I’ve been away for a few weeks and only just come back here, clearly in the nick of time. This thread was number 10 on the recently updated list and may have shortly dropped from view.
Phew!!!

Interesting – and delightful – do we know if DVD2 is audio or video? If not video, it’s curious they didn’t use the BBC Sight & Sound show…

So, no detailed information as yet… tsk…
It certainly makes me feel good to know that there is even more Tull for me to ignore.
Indeed. The last truly great Tull album, IMO.
I think you’re right there, though I have a soft spot for “Crest of a knave”.
Not just me then.
I thought I would have to Join Crest Of Knave-rs Anonymous
I’d say B&TB was the last great one – IMO. Though I have a soft spot for two or three of the songs on ‘Under Wraps’ (but not the production). It was largely game over for me by ‘Crest…’ – much as I willed it not to be (having only come in at B&TB and the Living In The Past comp plus a reissue of Aqualung).
It’s ok – it’s just not great, to my ears. The sound annoys me, for some reason – though not as much as it annoys Metallica, I bet.
I know what you mean. There’s an 80s vibe which I dislike, but I love “Farm on the freeway”, “Budapest” and “She said she was a dancer” plus the rest is perfectly listenable. Not Top Tull but given the ghastly era it survives quite well.
And it won a Grammy!
It always seemed to me that SSWAD and Budapest were the same song…
Nooooo quite different. I think IA’s reduced vocal style after surgery blunts the attack somewhat.
I know what you mean about the perving but it’s a nice tune. Generally its a solid album though not top third of the canon.
It’s a great price, especially compared to the Stand Up box.
Phew!!!
