As before, here’s an extract from a review in the NME. No clues: no year, no journalist name… Which album do you think is being reviewed?
“It’s all technically tight and ship-shape, as you’d expect, and will no doubt be a source of some excitement for those who get into a lather over light-fingered fretboard work and similar musicianly virtues. It’s also incredibly dull and pointless, like a film that sacrifices plot and characterisation for flashy special effects and stunts.”
Joe Satriani – Surfing With The Alien?
Dire Straits?
Yeah … it could be “Brothers in Arms”….
Everything Must Go – Steely Dan?
Anything by Jan hammer
No idea but the journalist sounds like a twat. Morley? Penman?
Well, it was the NME…🙂
Paul Young – No Parlez
Boom-tish!
Tubular Bells
Dunno – but I agree entirely with the reviewer.
Arf!
I’ve no idea what the album might be but I’m guessing that due to the proglivities of the poster it may be something by King Crimson or perhaps a Steve Hackett solo album.
Well, I can see why you might think that, Mr P – but previous Tiny Quiz subjects have included Joni, Springsteen, Kate Bush, Bowie, Roxy, Wire – so it’s not a given that it’ll be proggy…
In that case is it this?
Gracious! If only it were…
PS – you think the NME might have reviewed it?
…but not ruled out either…considering the breadth and wild eclecticism under the progressive banner…
Righty-ho in that case I settle on King Crimson mainly because despite repeated attempts they leave me unmoved. Obviously I have not the foggiest which album though so I’ll say all of them and the outtakes and sweepings left thankfully on various studio floors.
I’m sure you’ll get the answer you just need some discipline to find it.
Is it Discipline by King Crimson ?
Jeff Beck Blow by Blow?
That was my guess too.
And mine via the Jan Hammer barb.
Def Leppard- Rock of Ages
Eric Clapton – (insert name of selected album here)
Yes – Close To The Edge
A real guess, Tiggs? Or just havin’ a larf?
🙁
Is it cine lipids by gnomic rinks?
If only…
I should have pointed out they’re both anagrams.
cine lipids =:Discipline
gnomic rinks = King Crimson
I win the wilfully obscure prize methinks.
Of course, I didn’t spot it.
Having said that – I would certainly buy an LP called Cine Lipids by Gnomic Rinks. Scandi prog-metal, I suspect…
Anything by Santana.
Will go for Abraxas as it’s the only Santana album I own.
I’m not going to type the whole thing out on my phone (I’m in Norfolk for the weekend) but do they come from Bishop’s Stortford?
Not that I’m aware…
I’ll put the answer up later today. I can tell you that someone has guessed the band or artist correctly – but not the album.
Yes – Relayer
Huzzah! But no…🙁
Dire Straits was my original guess. But if not Brothers In Arms is it Love Over Gold? That review is pitch perfect for Private Investigations.
I am obviously the sort of person who gets “into a lather over musicianly virtues”! This is about one of my favourites by one of my all-time favourites. On the other hand, the NME was never really one of my favourites. I was more into Melody Maker and, occasionally, Sounds.
Was it the right album?
Yep. Got it, but it took some thinking about and, to be fair, others had hinted at it/guessed it already. Indeed, reading the quote again, I can see why many would have perhaps agreed that this was a fair and accurate review. I still think it’s a fab platter though and probably play it more than any other studio album by Mr Fripp and his merry popsters. The most regularly played is Meltdown, possibly the best of the recent (last decade or so) live recordings and effectively a pretty neat ‘greatest hits’. The recently released Sheltering Skies is also very good and is, in the main, Discipline live.
Lastly, thanks for posting these quizzes. Please keep them coming… even though I don’t normally get them, or any other such questions.
Yep, Meltdown is excellent. Recently I’ve been working through the big Heaven and Earth box – I like all the ProjeKct recordings and it’s a cracker of a parent album (so, contrary to reputation, I’m not all about the 1970s).
Thanks for the comment about the quizzes – every so often, I think people must be getting bored with them and that I should stop. Then I spot a good quote…it’s all about the quote, I never choose an album first and then seek out a quote.
Heaven & Earth box is tied for best box set ever (with the Exposures set). They were on fire in this period and could improvise better than almost anyone. Trey Gunn comes into his own here.
Ah c’mon now. this just isn’t good enough. Usually when you post a quiz the first thing I do is cheat by looking up the quote on my internet. Usually I can’t find the answer, so I guess wrongly, but this time the answer came up straight away! What sort of a quiz is it where the answer is right there out in the open for anybody with the slightest propensity for dishonesty? I might complain to the mods, haven’t decided yet, but whatever I do I think you should buck your ideas up a notch and start work immediately on the next quiz but this time with proper planning and attention. If you don’t mind my saying so.
(You’re harshing my vibe, Gary…)
Okay
The big reveal:
Writer was Andy Gill, reviewing in the NME, 03/10/1981
Album was Discipline by King Crimson
Who got it right? Well, Pencil got the band right yesterday, and restated it this morning – but didnt mention an album. Hubes dropped a heavy hint regarding the album without explicitly suggesting it as the answer- and Chrisf put the two together and ran to the finish line.
So, by that reckoning, @Chrisf wins the white carnation! Huzzah!
In all honesty, I had no clue – I was just jokingly referring to Hubes post that mentioned Discipline.
This is no time for honesty Chrisf
