That girl with the golden voice, Rumer, is my pop star of the week.
I saw her at KGB here in Stockholm last night. Spellbinding. A set of pipes that leaves me gob-smacked.
What’s more, when I went up to the merch table and thanked her for a great show and apologised that I had no cash with me to buy a CD she gave me one. (A CD, Moose!). The kindness of pop stars! I was very chuffed.
She did several covers: Darryl Oates’s I can’t go for that, Todd Rundgren’s Love is the answer and Jimmy Webb’s P F Sloan. She explained that when she recorded the Webb song she had no idea that P F was still doing music. Since then she’s met him and he’s a really remarkable bloke.
That of course got me Googling and I discovered this very bizarre clip. Rumer singing that song and the great man wandering on to the stage and singing along.
Which of course got me thinking: are there any other examples of a person being sung about actually making a cameo in this way?
Imagine Bananarama doing Robert De Niro’s waiting and the Hollywood superstar walking in from the wings. Or even better Boney M singing Rasputin and the mad monk materialising and joining in on backing vocals and doing a bit of crazy Russian dancing.
Any other cameo appearances you’ve seen or would like to see?
Morrissey and Mr Shankley anyone?

This is so good, I have to post it too.

That’s fantastic. There’s a comment on The Smiths’ thread about how close they are to each other and it’s exactly the same here – the interplay between the musicians is just a joy to watch and the backing vocals are just superb. And Darryl Hall can still sing, can’t he?
Here’s P F in his own right. His most famous song is perhaps Eve of Destruction.

It doesn’t feature any cameo appearances, but her go on the last series of Later with Jools was amazing – with full orchestra and everything. I’ve kept it on my PVR. I expect it’s on Youtube.
Rumer….deadly dull.
Not a patch on the much overlooked A Girl Called Eddy.
I love Eddy but she appeals more to music nerds like me (us). I’ve found Rumer – arguably the best voice of her type since Karen Carpenter – to be presentable to the general public (or my wife’s friends, anyway) in a way that Eddy isn’t.
I won’t be playing Rumer down the indie disco, though.
I like ‘em both – it’s hardly a “zero-sum game”, is it?
Well we agree on Eddy anyway! Rather fine.
She belongs on the ‘one-album wonders’ thread if she hasn’t made it there already.
She sounds a lot like Aimee Mann to me.
That was a bit hard Ivylander. I’ll agree that she’s had problems in following her first album. But she still sings exquisitely. Given the right material, I see no reason why she shouldn’t be able to produce another fine record.
What makes you think she’s a spent force?
Didn’t intend to come across as a h8ter. Just saying that I don’t know if there’ll be another record from her. Eleven years is a while….
An update: Just came across this interview with her from last year. The writer notes:
‘As of this writing, no follow-up has emerged. “Wasn’t my plan,” Moran laughs. “Sorry about that!” ‘
Bummed to have to pass this along….

And she pops up on Michael Weston King’s daunting new album, adding bvs.
