    After bomb threats today, officials had to evacuate two elementary schools in Springfield, Ohio, and move the students to a different location. They had to close a middle school altogether. This is the second day bomb threats have closed schools and public buildings after MAGA Republicans have spread the lie that Haitian immigrants there have been eating white people’s pets. Haitian immigrants, who were welcomed to Springfield by officials eager to revitalize the city and who are there legally, say they are afraid.

    Hunter Walker and Josh Kovensky of Talking Points Memo today explained where the lie had come from and how it had spread. More than two months ago, they wrote, Ohio senator J.D. Vance, who is Trump’s vice presidential running mate, began to speak about Springfield at a Senate Banking Committee hearing, trying to tie rising housing prices to immigrants. The next day, at the National Conservatism conference, Vance accused “illegals” of overwhelming the city. ”

  12. The speed with which the news cycle is moving on this election is like an episode of 24.

    Barely five days on from her trouncing of DT on Tues night, KH has clawed a slight
    lead in the polls but all everyone is talking about is Trump’s absurd claim about immigrants eating people’s pets. If you said something like that in the UK, you’d rightly be a national laughing stock

    Given that this election is likely to be decided by something like 200,000 votes across eight states, we can only hope that Trump has alienated sufficient minority groups (Veterans and the disabled being two obvious ones) for it to cost him the election.

    Scary times indeed. And the US’s hopelessly broken democracy means things are likely to get even scarier if Trump once again loses by a tiny majority come election night (“immigrants are eating Trump voters!”)

    • This time there isn’t the worry that he might not agree to leave the White House. Should he lose again, that’s two on the bounce and the Republicans – even the spineless ones – will drop him.

      • The real worry – and it’s a proper one – is that since 2020 the GOP have learned from the hundred-plus failed lawsuits around so-called election fraud and have seeded state electoral apparatus with MAGA-approved officials.

        Given it’s guaranteed that he won’t go quietly if he loses this will not be pretty.

          Equally worrying is the fact that despite seeing how quickly their hero washed his hands of those who drank his Kool Aid last time around, the members of the MAGA mob are so fanatical they’ll happily line up to take a second shot.

          Given that it seems hardly credible Trump will get or be able to pursue a fourth shot at the Presidency in 2028, any insurrection this year is likely to be a kamikaze mission.
