I am listening to my old copy of Stephen Stills first solo album. I bought it because “Love The One You’re With” was on it and pretty much ignored it for years afterwards because it turns out that “Love The One You’re With” is a piece of shit.
However, having recently read Pete Doggett’s new book on CSN&Y I was inspired to put it on again, and I had forgotten that Jimi Hendrix was on it. As was Eric Clapton, Rita Coolidge and a whole squad of luminaries of the time. And yes, “Love The One You’re With” is still crap but the rest of it is bloody ace.
But the thing about Stills is after about 1974 he genuinely seemed to have burnt out. I remember listening to the CSN&Y Live 1974 CD that came out a few years ago and he sounded shot to shit. He could barely sing sometimes. But before that year? One classic after the next. I think if you were around at the time your money would be on him rather than Neil Young having the astonishing career.
So my question is, has any artist blown it quite like Stills? Even Simple Minds, my usual standard for “losing it” didn’t soar as high as Stills did in his peak.
