I had never heard of The Vernon Girls until yesterday when they were on the radio. Sounds like there is a great story in there, they started out as a 15 strong choir for the pools company and over the years were reduced to 3 singers.
I know there have been lots of schools, football clubs, etc that have had chart hits but cannot think of any other companies. If you can think of any – I am sure there must be others – please post them here
This is the song that I heard – strangely odd but I quite like it 🙂
Also strangely odd…but I like it too. They were a fixture on the telly in the early 60s.
Marty Wilde and Joe Brown both married Vernons giris. Didn’t some of them become the Ladybirds who were always on TOTP and Benny Hill ?
Yes SourCrout, good points there. Sure there must be a big story to tell here. Pity they cannot do something like they did with the Cilla programmes for TV recently with Sheridan Smith
I was on a cruise at the back end of last year and one of our table companions was a former Vernons Girl – one of the initial choir rather than the subsequent ‘pop stars’. We heard lots of tales about growing up in Liverpool in the 60’s and about many of the characters who were trying to make careers at that time. Our companion dropped out after about a year but others went on with the singing and some made it. Amongst them was Maggie Stredder who she went on to lead the Ladybirds. And they did the backing vocals on ‘Hey Joe’ with Jimi Hendrix. That’s real fame that is!
Someone once told me that the Ladybirds were known in the business as Lumpy, Bumpy and Grumpy.
