First trailer is out for Edger Wrights Sparks documentary. It looks excellent!
The only band ever to get better with age, (ignoring the slightly dodgy 80’s period) will they finally get the accolades they deserve after 50 years?
Musings on the byways of popular culture
I can’t wait to see it. They wouldn’t sell tickets to non-US residents for the premiere which was a pity.
…..but what slightly dodgy 80’s period? Have you gone back to the 80s albums recently?
It looks really great. I love them. They are the best band in the world at the moment.
The thing about their 80s albums is there isn’t a great album in there, and they managed at least one in all the other decades (including this one!). Angst in my Pants is probably my favourite, but it’s good rather than great.
Yeah, didn’t mind the early 80’s album even if they did sound like they were trying a bit too hard to soundtrack wacky teen comedy’s but the last few dance pop albums of the late 80’s are hard work.
I think they were hard work at the time but having gone back to them, they ‘make sense’. I don’t think they’re career highlights but I think it’s harsh to suggest they’re dodgy. two of the ’21 albums in 21 nights’ gigs I went to were ‘Interior Design’ and ‘Music That You can Dance To’ and they were brilliant evenings… mind you, they were free because of the low ticket sales!
I think I’m with Arch on this one, John, those two albums are kinda difficult to love. I was listening to Interior Design last week, and while So Important and Madonna are fun, the others don’t stay in the mind. Glad you enjoyed the shows, but I’m not surprised the ticket sales were slow!
Sparks are on the long list of bands I should investigate because of their influence on that 80s I enjoy. Billy Mackenzie covered “Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth” for years I had no idea it was a Sparks song..
Dig out the first 2 albums – or even better the Halfnelson demos…There was some Whistle Test footage somewhere of their doing this
It’s a bit more rawk than the Island stuff, which turns up here complete with Keith Moon and Richard Starkey unleashing a bants-fest intro !
I will have to see this somewhere though I have to say the trailer didn’t reveal much.
