It was great – a few lower moments (I though Jarvis’s vocals were off at first, maybe the sound balance but he was too close to the mic?) and some of the song choice – maybe dictated by the singers skills – wasn’t quite what I would have selected – but to hear those songs with the full orchestral arrangements was just spine-tingling..
BBC Four are showing it on Friday evening.
I wonder if there is a large enough following for Uncut (or Mojo) to publish a “Scott Walker” magazine in their series?
Throw in Adolf Hitler, Mickey Mouse and Ghandi (like, they’re going to look that closely) and we’re already on six. Anyone know the names of the Dagenham Girl Pipers?
Just watched that. Amazing. I was impressed that the BBC have found a new programme for Eddie Jordan to be on, and why did they make Romesh Rangganathan ‘white up?’
Susanne Sundfør’s contributions resonated with me more, simply because the male vocals inevitably have to compare directly with Scott’s, though they were fine on their own merits of course…
… and Scott had Esther Ofarim sing one track on “Till The Band Come In”, so he obviously had an ear for songs which could benefit from a female vocal (even it was his manager foisting her on him!)
Personally, I would have liked to see Marc Almond on the bill, as he’s done some excellent versions of Scott’s songs, and (along with Julian Cope) was one of his most vocal supporters in the early 80’s when those albums were out of print, but it was a great concert nonetheless…
I watched the concert this morning.
Absolutely stunning !
These 4 albums have been a constant for me throughout the last 50 years ( almost ).
I bought them as they were released in my mid teens ( and I’m 64 now ).
It was really great to see and hear theses songs performed with a full orchestra and choir and presented so well by the four singers.
I was choking back the tears on a couple of occasions ( Copenhagen / Montague Terrace in Blue ). I wish I had been there.
I watched it on the weekend. Glorious! If I had known about it earlier I might have considered flying over from Canada for it. I’ve done things like that before …

Who’s he gonna take as his ‘Date’?

I’ve just finished the Jarvis interview so I need a breather before launching into that.
I was there too.

Ooh, let’s have a petition.
Groovy idea. Good start as well, we’ve got two names already.
It’d be a bit thin on the interview front
You can add my name to the petition.
That’s 3 of us !!

Apart from that, bloody amazing performance.
Absolutely superb – no filler for nearly 90 minutes, beautifully performed by both orchestra & singers.
I’m ashamed to say I’d never heard of Susanne Sundfør before, but she was rather good.
Thought her Amorous Humphrey Plugg was the highlight and dare I say it, sounds and makes more sense from a female perspective
Hawley effortlessly brill as ever. Only Jarvis limited voice was shaky bit but he got through with charm

I heard it first on Radio 3 on the night. I think your last comment sums it up for me Mr John. Really do wish I’d been there.
