Endorsed by his widow, so that’s OK then. They’ve dug poor Buddy up now with the excuse that it is 60 years since his last recordings and it will realise ‘what Buddy woulda wanted done’, according to his older brother Larry. The irony that Buddy died in that plane crash because he coudn’t get hold of royalties is probably lost on these grave robbers.

Next year – Jimi Hendrix with the Phil ?
Just stop – it will give them ideas, and I wouldn’t put it past them!
Other candidates.. ? Given their track record and the obvious demographic they are aiming at, I’m guessing these are up for this ‘treatment’…
The Everly Brothers
Cliff
Billy Fury
Johnny Cash
Beatles (hopefully they wouldn’t…would they?)
Well, famously, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have already done the Sex Pistols’ Pretty Vacant (on the “Anarchy Arias” album).
I am sad to report, Nigel, that The Sound of Fury has already been done. Yikes.
And it was ruddy awful. Not long before he died Fury recorded 20 of his biggest hits with an orchestra and, save a couple of his singles that my parents had, this is how I first got to know his songs. The album was great and the recordings, done with Fury’s approval and cooperation, exist, so I don’t know why they felt the need to make this new one.
Not until Yoko, Paul, Olivia and Ringo are all dead.
And until Spector gets out of jail.
If they try this shit with Fulham Fallout I swear I’ll do time.
You mean you’re not familiar with the “Light Orchestral Librettos with the Lurkers” album, Moosey?
Or “The Crack Symphonic: The Ruts Orchestral”.
Cliff did the orchestral thing with True Love Ways before. I thought it worked rather well. Move on, you don’t have to listen to it, as far as I am aware the originals have not been destroyed.
Yeah, that’s a fair point but I was in my local record emporium today and, in the soul section, Aretha’s orchestral LP was the most prominently displayed. I was thinking about the civilian who, following the coverage of her death, wanted to know what all the fuss was about and that’s where their hand wold land, more’s the pity…
Agree with Dai here – the originals are still out there for those who want them, and there’s obviously a market for these or they wouldn’t keep putting them out. I know the Elvis ones in particular were huge sellers for example.
I’ll say one thing for them, they are on the shop floor.
Go into W.H. Smith’s, where the bigger branches stock a grand total of about 15 CDs, and without doubt the latest of these Philharmonic jobs will be one of them.
Christmas + not having a Scooby = Ker-ching.
Just reading a bit about the tragic day. They carried on the tour for at least another two weeks without Buddy BB and RV!!! That tour bus musta been a tad solemn.
I don’t usually like to appear smug, showy etc but if there existed a list of UK Buddy Holly fanatics I am fairly sure I would appear in its Top 20. My thirst for Holly info and trivia started in 1963 and continues to this day.
I saw this release mentioned on a Holly Facebook site and, as usual, all the comments were calling the lines of “Buddy you are still the greatest person that ever lived and this album will be beautiful…..” I posted my comment pointing out that it will be basically absolute crap.
Shame on other ‘supposedly’ Holly fans who even think this is an acceptable thing to do to his legacy!
His widow is, allegedly, a money grabbing monster and I wouldn’t try to argue against that train of thought. She has profited handsomely since Holly’s death. She has also managed to spin lots of big fibs about her 7 or so months with Buddy. He certainly never tried phoning her a few hours before he died being a good example. There is some thought that, by the time of his death, Holly deeply regreted marrying the woman and as she didn’t attend his funeral I am inclined to accept that he did actually regret marrying her,
Time to stop ranting now but, before I go, I have just looked at the track listing….12 songs around 2 minutes 30 seconds each adds up to about 25-27 minutes total. A complete and utter rip off – Do they know it’s Christmas? Well Maria Elena Holly certainly does!
12*2.5 = 30. Still a bit short.
I’m gobsmacked that anyone would want to buy one of these releases.
Should one actually punch someone seen buying it? What are the ethics on this? I say yes, others on here may advise caution.
And yet, with the world having hurtled (it’s gone beyond hurtling) towards a pre-Rock ‘n’ Roll age, it feels positively of the zeitgeist!
