I thought I’d bring this to your attention. I’m halfway through reading The power of the dog by Thomas Savage. This is being pushed as another undiscovered classic from the publishers (well they would, wouldn’t they ?) that brought you Stoner. I think this is better. It’s set in the Montana ranch lands, a story of two brothers in the mid 20th century. There’s some fantastically rich & descriptive writing and the two brothers are really well drawn characters. There was a lot of love for Stoner on this site. Have a look out for this.
Here’s some Montana banjo music, let’s have some more Western music.
None more western, and only recently departed, here’s Dan with a few friends…

And somewhat more typically, here he is again…
That’s a nice clip what popped up in the RIP Dan thread
From the Flip Wilson show, you’ll all recall.
I’ve never heard of this book but there’s another with the same title by Don Winslow. Fabulous story about drug cartels and the supply of drugs between Mexico and USA.
I too thought this referred to Winslow’s book.
I agree it is a fabulous read – being based in reality but populated with fictional characters (many of whom I believe are composites of real life characters). It’s a real I-can’t-put-it-down or I’ve-got-a-few-minutes_I’ll read-a-few-pages book.
I’m hoping the recently published sequel The Cartel is as good.
I didn’t know about the sequel. I’m not giving Kindle a tenner for it so I’ve ordered it from my library. 615 pages…sheesh! Ta muchly for the info.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of The Cartel. I intend to read it, but I have a lot in my reading list to get through.
As it happens I’m reading a Don Winslow novel at the moment – Satori.
I’m about 40 pages in, and it hasn’t grabbed me like most of his others, but I’ll finish it. I’m just hoping it will
Sure thing, I’ll let you know. I read all of his but I haven’t thought about him for a good few years so there are bound to be a few I’ve not tried. In days gone by when I found an author I liked, I read all the books….I don’t do that anymore…..in fact I tend to stay away from old favourites as they often disappoint when they’re turning out books every year.
You want some more banjo? Of course you do!

Banjo? Someone say banjo?
As the Dawg says, there’s only one thing better than one banjo….
