Here’s my suggestion: those among us with strong views about recent politics events who need to talk about it, STAY on the ‘take control’ thread. Let’s not let it bleed across the forum – let’s no of us fall out about it all.
What are you up to this weekend?
Me, I’m about to go into Belfast to see GT’s Boos Band from Glasgow at a free Belfast Blues Fest show – yay! And tomorrow, it’s Welsh Sarah’s ‘Our Back Yard’ Festival in Gilford, Armagh, headlined by Wookalily! Double yay!! 🙂

We’re driving home tomorrow after a wonderful weeks holiday in Lincolnshire where we fully recharged our batteries after a bit of a traumatic week before we left (elderly mother) looking forward to another week off in sunny Sussex.
I love this song. Not my usual type of thing but I like it’s joyous nature.
Skeggy?
Had a game of crazy golf there this morning, thrashed by my wife. I went to pieces!
We stay in cottage oj a farm about 6 miles from Mablethorpe which we’ve stayed in off and on for about 25 years. We love it, it’s a real home from home.
ON a farm!
Ever see Robert Wyatt?
I have seen Robert Wyatt, but in Brighton outside a church near Kensington Gardens.
But never in Louth where I think he lives. I do mention it every time we go there.
Louth? I thought he lived at Humberston Fitties.
Graham Fellows lives in Louth.
More importantly, I used to live in the throbbing metropolis of Holton-le-Clay. A cracking place to be a kid – surrounded as it is by farmland to mess about in. Probably not so much fun if you’re an adult. The church is worth a look though. Dead old, it is (oh get me, Pevsner)
I seem to remember an interview that Billy Bragg did with him some years ago, and I thought it was in Louth where it said it was his home town.
But I have been known to be wrong many, many, many times before.
He lives a few miles away from me in a rather nice spacious coastal Dorset set up, as you’d expect.
We’re getting confused. It’s Billy Bragg who lives in Dorset. Robert Wyatt lives somewhere in Lincolnshire. I live in Der Fabrik.
I’ve never been to me, but I have been to Paull.
Heyyyyy….. nice lighthouse, Paull!
That’s no lighthouse, I’m just pleased to… oh you know the rest.
Sooo predictable…
TheLovelyJulie is from Mablethorpe. Spent a month with her there one day.
I’ll get me pac-a-mac.
An in bwetween weekend. Last weekend we went to tepee Stonefree festival at the O2. We went for the rock festival on Saturday, then again for Wilko Johnson in Sunday when we found out his show would be on a free stage. Next weekend it’s a recording of John Cooper Clarke at Broadcasting House to round off a day doing something (haven’t decided what yet) in London. Nothing planned this weekend, so I’ll probably just weep into the shreds of my torn up voter registration card as I comtemplate the shattered dreams and bleak futures of our nation’s childr …. Oh, sorry. Forgot.
I’m off to a PMC speakers launch event tomorrow, although I’m told the model 26 (the new version of the top-of-the-range ones I have) are still in development and won’t be there after all.
On Sunday I’m going to my pal’s band, Atomised, play a mantinee gig to launch their new album. CD’s good, so I hope the gig is too.
Was going to Retromanblog’s Ebbot Lundberg show at The Half Moon tonight, but my car has suddenly signed itself off sick with inability to charge it’s battery. The battery is currently out of the car and on charge in my kitchen.
Having to give that a miss, therefore, but still intending to get to tomorrow’s Daylight Music at the Union Chapel. Trains all the way from Watford rather than my usual drive down the M1 to Brent Cross and tube journey.
The Victoria Park Singers, Kemper Norton and Settembre are the 3 featured acts with Paul Reynolds from Vespers playing piano in the intervals. I have no idea what any of them will sound like, but it’ll get me out and about for a few hours.
Got a letter from NPower in this morning’s post, telling me that due to System Issues they’ve been unable to collect some of my monthly direct debit payments and that there may be an outstanding balance to pay. No mention of an amount. Knowing them they probably have even less idea than myself. They say they’re crediting £20 to my account.
This afternoon’s masterplan is to refit the car battery once it’s charged and head off towards my mechanic’s workshop. Once I’m over the requisite distance from home, if the warning lights etc. start flashing I can call the AA and have it towed to his workshop, thus saving myself an £80 recovery fee.
I really like this just now, as a pick-me-up. Jimmy Normal & the Viceroys – You Crack Me Up:
We’re at home, me wrapped in cotton wool, Mrs. B cooking some amazing food and generally looking after me. Tonight (right about now) is the 11 week anniversary of my first symptoms of this proxy pneumonia. I will be sat in my chair (much as I have been for the last 77 days) watching the rugby, football and racing and trying not to annoy her too much with my incessant coughing.
This track just came on the iPod. The sound of it, of his voice, just about sums up my mood tonight.
‘Proxy pneumonia’ – feck, I’ve been fixated on the bloody vote too much today!
Tomorrow I go to work. After that I am doing no work until 1st August. This is because Babygeddon 2- WTF Were We Thinking???? is due any day now, and as a self employed, freelance media wanker in some demand, I get to do this (after budgeting of course).
So I work. I cuddle my toddler. I try to get into a frame of mind where I am not thinking about politics. And then I will cuddle a new baby.
That’s the spirit, lads! Sounds like some packed weekends there – and a cunning plan from Mike H.
GT’s Boos Band were FABULOUS – going back for more at another of their weekend-in-Belfast shows on Sunday…
Mazey Day in Penzance.
Children/parents parading up and down the exceedingly steep Market Jew Street (why are most Cornish High Streets on the side of mountains?).
Punch ‘n’ Judy. Stalls. Men dressed as women and/or pirates. Plenty of beer opportunities.
Found myself standing next to a very handsome man last year…..Justin Hayward.
Down in Croyde, Nth Devon with the dog, GF joining us in our cottage tomorrow for the weekend. No telly but that’s no bad thing. Just had fish and chips and 2 pints of Otter Ale. No sign of armageddon yet…….
No telly is a good option, currently. No radio either would be even better.
TheLovelyJulie personning a stall at Pride tomorrow, and then going out on the lash afterwards with her bezzie from work. Therefore, I’m going over to pick her up in the morning and take her to the station and am then coming home for a FULL DAY OF TEST RUGBY ON THE TELLY INCLUDING THE U20s WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WHICH ENGLAND WILL WIN OH YES.
Much bacon will be involved.
Late evening, I’ll be going back to the station to collect TLJ, who I anticipate will be amply refreshed.
Somethingsomething Youtube music clip.
Gonna go see the great Joe Jackson Saturday evening.
Yay, welcome back, Bri!!
It’ll be a great show, I’ve no doubt!
My weekend started brilliantly with the Ebbot Lundberg gig at the Half Moon last night. Apologies to Mike H, but this was a cracking gig; all 3 bands – started with The Fallen Leaves (“punk rock for gentlemen”), I never tire of watching Rob Simmons playing guitar. How he doesn’t shred his fingers is a mystery. They were followed by Galileo 7. Get to see them, their drummer is fantastic. Ebbot, despite a broken collarbone, didn’t disappoint. He and his band – The Indigo Children (like a junior Soundtrack of our Lives) – were superb, jumping about, obviously having fun and engaging with the crowd. They finished with one of my favourite Soundtrack songs – The Passover – and I went home happy.
I’m off to officiate a wedding shortly (just the registrar, sign here and all that). I’ll go and have a chat afterwards with the owner of my favourite local bookshop, stop off for a swift half on way home and maybe watch the footie later.
I’ll leave training for the triathlon for some other weekend.
Saw Pharaoh Sanders last night at Bird’s Basement in Melbourne last night.
Great show albeit pretty short at about 70 minutes. Fantastic band who do most of the playing with Pharaoh resplendent in burnt gold silk shirt and that trademark white whiskers. Pharaoh would stroll on slowly from his chair behind the band and blow these long fluent solos -really took it to another level. No scronking like some of his stuff and a bit of vocalising but a beautiful tone. At 75 he paces himself well while the band did long stretch outs on Coltrane’s Ole ( I think) and of course the Creator has a Master Plan. The African influence was manifest.
Special shout out to the drummer. a white in suit ,tie and hankie in top pocket. Very inventive with lot of tapping on cymbal stands, sides of drums etc but can really move when he felt like it.
They’ve been here all week staying in apartments above the venue and according to the drummer are pretty relaxed and enjoying their time here.
This isn’t seeing Pharaoh in his prime but ,as they say, a legend and well worth seeing.
I didn’t know he was still with us!
Down in Plymouth for my dad’s seventieth birthday, awaiting the arrival of a flotilla of elderly cousins. Plenty of screaming grandchildren running up and down the hall and a neurotic dog. My brother and I are wondering when it is acceptable to start drinking.
I’ve got a tough gig tonight.
I’m off to sing at someones 50th birthday party.
The invitation say’s “casually elegant” so we’ve decided to hedge our bets and the band will be wearing DJs, bow ties and loud shorts. That should cover all bases. There will also be a steel band, swimming pool, lots of beer and a mobile fish and chip van. We’ll be camping in the back garden with everybody else, unless it rains. Then we’ll sleep in the van. We’ve got camp beds and sleeping bags so we’re sorted either way.
It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.
I decided to cheer myself up buying 10 LPs I didn’t already own from the Emmaus charity shop and then drank beer at the Tatton Brewery stall located at the Lowry Food & Drink Festival in Salford. The rest of the weekend will be watching the footie from the Euro Champs (am I allowed to say Euro? Damn said it again…)
Here is one of the LPs I bought. Very fab and groovy.
