I’m wondering if anyone else is anticipating this BBC adaptation as keenly as I am.
It’s one of my favourite Le Carre novels, which has I gather had one or two tweaks to bring it into the 21st Century and the Olivia Coleman character was a man. The casting looks really promising.
I hope it lives up to the pre-publicity.
John le Carre and Hugh Laurie? That’ll do me.
Top tip, thanks Carl. Had it down to watch but forgot it starts tonight – in 6 minutes!!! 🙂
Scrub that….24 hours and 6 minutes…..☺️
Seems to have all the right credentials.
It’s a while since I read the book but looking forward to it.
Le Carré is a favourite author of long standing and this type of drama is what I like best on my TV.
Not entirely sure Hugh Laurie won’t overplay his role, having heard/seen a clip. He has that potential, unfortunately.
Olivia Colman can do no wrong however , so I’m most definitely in.
I enjoyed the book a lot, so I’m looking forward to it. “Looking forward” in this case, though, means I’ll probably record the whole series with every intention of watching it and then never quite get round to it. I have the whole of Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell from last year that I’ve not even looked at yet. Last night we watched the second episode of Deutschland 83, just six weeks after really enjoying the first part. I suck at television.
I saw something about this a few weeks ago and was ridiculously excited about it, particularly given that Le Carre had so enthusiastically endorsed it, but then I forgot all about it.
And so I’m now even more ridiculously excited that it’s on in 5 and 1/2 hours time. Yee and indeed hoo.
I am planning to actually sit down and actually watch this as the appointed time. I know that if I Sky+ it the chances of me ever seeing it are nanoscopically small. I am a big fan of all the lead actors, and the whole thing smells of quality. (I nearly typed ‘quails’ then, I mean it might smell of quails, and that – also – would be fine.)
Hell yes I’m looking forward to it – the ‘Tinker Tailor…’ film was excellent and this one has a terrific cast.
Excellent article by John le Carre in the Guardian on this and other adaptations of his work.

I haven’t seen it yet, and it may well indeed be an excellent adaptation, but I note that in his praise Mr Le Carre has forgotten to mention that it has been produced by The Ink Factory, a production outfit run by one Simon Cornwell, whose father happens to be John Cornwell, better known as…you know where I’m going with this, don’t you?
Of, course, Rock Follies!!
I’m not a great fan of Le Carre, and I’m always dubious about Hugh Laurie in ‘serious actor’ mode, but I’ll probably give it a go, seeing as Deutschland ’83 finished last week.
looking forward to this – hope it lives up to the book.
Before all the nitpickers wade in, I thought the 1st episode was terrific and my next 5 Sunday nights are sorted. I’ve not read the book which makes it all the more exciting (no preconceptions). Nothing wrong with Hugh Laurie, so far, as villain hiding behind a mask.
Agreed. It was top quality stuff.
This and the second series of Happy Valley. Beeb at its best.
Well now. Fair to say it was absolutely wonderful.
Laurie’s deliciously reptilian Roper
Hiddleston’s boyish charm (let’s not mention the buttocks – d’oh!)
Colman’s withering ‘feeling a bit discombobulated are we?’ to dastardly Dickie.
Hollander’s hilarious but deadly waspishness
etc. etc etc….
An absolute triumph.
Didn’t really buy the ending but the sustained suspense throughout was top notch TV
I agree with you. Fabulous, fabulous TV until ten minutes to go. I was hoping for a little twist. Beautifully shot and acted throughout, give or take the odd dodgy accent.
Well I and my wife, who isn’t usually a fan of spy stories, both thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though it finished a couple of weeks back. Bit late getting back to my own thread, to endorse it.
Now maybe for their next production the could try Single& Single.
