Just gonna throw this one out there to see who salutes. One of my more memorable gigs of recent years was seeing The National. They started slow and ramped it up gradually and inexorably. I was with one of my daughters who said that Matt Berninger reminded her of a dishevelled librarian

Yes saw them on the High Violet tour in Warwick. great gig and the lights up accapella singing with the audience joining in was just brilliant. Why oh why oh why are they not as big as Coldplay? I’d settle for as big as Maroon 5…
Agreed Moseley, I saw them in Brisbane and the audience really got behind Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks – it seems to be quite a feature of their concerts now.
Great song. Incredibly, the music has just been used over the end of tonight’s Masterchef. It worked rather beautifully.

Awesome. I’ve been having a big High Violet jag lately, confirming my belief that Bryan Devendorf is the best drummer in the world today. The drums are the key to The National for me, they never fail to be just right.
Love ’em. And I agree with Bob – the drumming is brilliant – restrained and wonderfully complex at the same time. They are splendid live.
Great tune from a brilliant album. Still haven’t connected with ‘Trouble will find me’ though. Needs more spins but seems to lack the choons of the former album.
Well worth sticking with it.

I first heard them on a free Uncut Americana CD (About Today) & that was it, for me. Haven’t seen them live but I found the tour documentary filmed by Matt’s brother gave me a real taste of their live power.

Slow build up and then at 3:15 a sudden change of tune. They also did this rather well on the opener, Cardinal Song, on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers.
Love them! Alligator is my number one album of all time. Every song on it has been my favourite at some point or another. Amazing!
They are a great live band, although somewhat controversially I preferred them when they toured without the brass section. The Boxer tour was something else & although I have seen them numerous times (16 according to my losers gig spreadsheet :)) I have never seen the same show twice! The songs seem to evolve & live versions can be very different (but in a good way).
