A colleague tipped me off to jazz poet Anthony Joseph a couple of weeks ago. This* is Jimmy, Upon That Bridge from the album Caribbean Roots. It has rarely been off the gramophone since.

Jazz poetry, eh? Not rap then. Definitely not rap. That’s a quite different way of talking over rhythmic music, I gather
Musical poetry brings to my mind John Cooper Clarke, and it’s not that. Nor is it what I think of as rap (although I am no rap expert).
Think, perhaps, Fela Kuti.
I’m listening to a new all-instrumental album called “Into the Light” by the US acoustic guitarist Marisa Anderson.
What can I tell you? it’s great. Beautiful playing. It sounds like she’s constantly on the verge of breaking into the soundtrack of an old Western film … but never quite does. Enchanting.
