My good pal from afar – and colleague on many reissue/box set projects – the mighty EROC, an audio restoration/mastering genius, is profiled in this fascinating new 18-minute film from his studio in Germany.
I’ve had the great pleasure of working with him on several Repertoire projects – having heard the before/after audio, his work on the 6CD upgrade of ‘The Pretty Things Live at the BBC’ and the Barbara Thompson 14CD BBC set was especially superb, in my view.
Current projects on which we are both involved include the forthcoming Pentangle 1982 & 2007-11 4CD live/BBC set on Cherry Red (in which his work on amateur/soundboard 1982 live recordings is particularly astonishing) and a Fairport Convention 11CD+DVD 1982-90 live/BBC set for Madfish.
Thanks for this interesting interview (not least for the voice of the “interviewer”). I can vouch for the quality of the Barbara Thompson boxset. It is excellent. And good news about the forthcoming releases.
A list of Eroc’s projects (I don’t know if it is comprehensive) can be found on Discogs. He’s been pretty busy these last few decades.
He’s frightfully dull, isn’t he? I feel like we’d get along swimmingly…
We started along very similar paths (taking valve radios to bits) but I decided quite early on in my ‘career’ to take a better-paid job and keep music as a hobby.
If anyone isis far away from »dull« it’s Mr. Eroc. Listen to his solo albums, or watch a clip from a Grobschnitt gig – Eroc is the wacky drummer in the swimsuit and the victorian moustache who keeps the whole gig grounded with his hilarious stage announcements and between-songs stories. All the while keeping a steady syncopated 7-8 rhythm.
I’m with Fatima – Eroc is a really friendly, enthusiastic, slightly wacky fellow (from many jolly email conversations in the course of working on various projects together). Bear in mind that (a) he’s answering questions in a second language; (b) the German voice is predisposed to always sound stiff/’boring’ to English-speaker ears! 🙂

Annoyingly, the text didn’t post. Here it is:

Hats off to the fellow! 🙂

Another testimonial for the Barbara Thompson set – superb job! And great music – one of my favourite purchases in recent years.

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m not really that dull in real life, either. But I do understand what’s on Eroc’s screens, which makes me a nerd.
