This is absolutely worth anyone’s time here. Mack McCormick is new to me. This piece is about how obsession can send you absolutely mad and I reckon some of the real musos here will cough guiltily to themselves.

The perils of procrastination this article unveils are an awkward reminder for someone like me who never finished his thesis and consequently failed to get an MA, thanks to sprawling research and lack of focus.
‘Sprawling research and lack of focus’ – new Afterword T-shirts now available. 🙂
‘Sprawling research and lack of focus’ is my middle name
I’m sure there’s a German portmanteau word that might do the trick.

Lack of focus begets sprawling research presumably
Yes, yes – I admit to my academic failings. (Probably shouldn’t have mentioned it).
Was it an unfinished MA on Dutch progressive rock history – sprawling research yet lack of Focus?
Chapeau!
It certainly seemed at times to be a lot of hocus pocus, but it was not a lack of Focus, not even of Krokus that caused my loss of purpose.
I’m just glad that, unlike Mack McCormick, I was able to lay it to one side, and get on with the rest of my life.
Great article and thanks for posting. Reminds me a lot of a late friend of my father’s who was a maverick expert in his field, operating outside academia. His output was similarly problematic.
That was a great read – thanks for posting it.
Fascinating read, thanks Gangles.
Thanks Twang. It also blew my mind. When obsessives to a disservice to their obsession. It’s such a cautionary tale and I literally don’t know what is true and what is bollocks here.
