The colourful character Michael Caborn-Waterfield recently died. Here is his obit. His passing marks the end of an era in the UK; the late 50s-early 70s populated by the seedy glamour of Diana Dors, Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers. Surely there is a film there. Anyone fancy collaborating on the script?

In passing, the Time obit mentions that he was the “masked man” at an infamous party Christine Keeler attended. Here is her recollection: “A naked man, wearing a mask to hide his famous face, ‘waited on table like a slave’ ” ooeeer.

The obituary is a remarkable read: “a “restless spirit”, had a somewhat cavalier attitude to banks and when he was short of funds had a habit of “evaporating” into thin air. ”
The word “cad” seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Is it just me or does Cardew look disturbingly like Aussie cad Sir Les Paterson here?
Not only did Cardew (great name) enjoy a lengthy career which concluded in a short but memorable cameo in Shirley Valentine, he was also the ‘Fakir’ to whom Bunghit Din, in Carry On Up the Kyber, said – ‘Fakir. Off’.
Cardew Robinson, bloody hell there is a character who I’d completely wiped from my memory. One of those people who had a entire career through one gimmick really.
The bloke in the obit though – I read The Times review a day or two back and thought, ‘Why is this guy even getting obit space?’ He was just a hanger-on, a git, a petty criminal, a loser. No glamour – just seedy.
Terry-Thomas was a brilliant man. This guy was a tosser.
Oh, I think it was justified. He was on the periphery of quite a few important events and, as I said in the OP, he personifies a certain louche character trait of the time. That’s not to say he wasn’t reprehensible.
