I was aware of Jellyfish at the time but wrote them off due to their image. H.R. Puffinstuff meets the Monkees. They were trying too hard! Fast forward 30 years and I’m blown away by the songs, the arrangements, the skills of the musicians. I don’t know anything really about them at all but I want to now.
The song I’ve chosen to represent this thread is called Russian Hill. The slide guitar is just exquisite. 😘

Listening to both albums there’s a lot of second guessing going on on the second album. I can only rate the aforementioned song from this album really.

Which is beautiful.

Just sittin’ on the porch watching the tumbleweed blow on down your lonely street.
Never knowingly listened to a note of Jellyfish, may rectify that late.

To bring right up to date, here’s The Lickerish Quartet, which is 3 of the original Jellyfish members recording together again. They will be releasing material over a series of EPs, the first of which came out a couple of months ago and contains this track…….

I was the same in 1991 – the outfits detracted from the music. Over time, I gave Jellyfish another chance, and I’m glad I did. I’ve got everything there is to buy, plus a great deal of ex-members’ music (Jason Falkner in particular.)
I’ll never tire of their brilliance.

Have you got the Jon Brion album ‘ Meaningless’? He was in the ‘fish orbit, as well as appearing on/producing a host of other artists’ records (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple etc).

Oh yes indeed! When I saw his name on the Spilt Milk credits I made the connection between Jellyfish. And those first two, amazing, Aimee Mann albums. Had to buy Meaningless in Minus Zero, a rather snobby power pop store in Portabello. Cost a fortune to me at the time (£30) but worth every penny in retrospect.
Have you got the Grays’ album ‘Ro Sham Bo’ featuring Brion and Jason Falkner? Another cracker (that cost a fortune)…

I have that Grays album, good stuff same with ALL of Jellyfish`s musical output and the solo stuff.
If they`d been around in the 70`s they would have been huge.

As a bub, on trips to the beach, I used to eat jellyfish, apparently. Jellyfish and cigarette butts.
Anyway, carry on.

I love the two Jellyfish albums.
If memory serves, they got a bit of airplay on MTV at the height of grunge and, as I loathed that genre, I took to these right away. Not even a singing drummer could put me off.
Andy Sturmer’s disappearance from the music scene is a bizarre one; clearly so talented. The only other place I have seen his name since Spilt Milk was on the credits of a couple of Disney kid shows that he did the themes for earlier this century. I have never quite fallen for the other splinters from the group – maybe that’s my loss. I might check out one or two of the acts mentioned above if I can find ’em.
Here’s one I liked:

Roger Manning’s solo stuff is good.

Spilt Milk is growing on me but my god I could do without the Sabrina track. It’s exactly this kind of schtick that gets in the way. 🤦♂️
