Author:Bob Mortimer
This is the sequel to Bob Mortimer’s award winning debut novel, The Satsuma Complex. Continuing the fruit based theme, it picks up the story of the three main characters where its predecessor left off. With his girlfriend Emily now based in Brighton where she is renovating the dilapidated hotel bequeathed to her by her late father, Gary remains in London in his humdrum legal job, as ever paralysed by indecision as to what road his life should take, and with the upcoming trial of his previous assailants looming over him like a black cloud. Things are brought to a head with the arrival on the scene of Mr Sequence, a menacing agent of the accused, who is determined to ensure Gary doesn’t turn up in court to give his evidence. All kinds of mayhem ensue as Emily and their friend Grace are drawn into the web, as if Emily doesn’t already have enough on her plate trying to get planning permission to hang a giant perspex avocado outside the newly renovated hotel! There’s lots of action and intrigue and an abundance of power, corruption and lies in this very enjoyable read, although rather less of the author’s unique and quirky sense of humour which he seems to have dialed down a bit from the earlier novel. Needless to say, all the various threads are brought together in a thrilling climax where certain things of course turn out not to be as they first appeared. A very good and entertaining light hearted read, but one that works best if you’ve read the previous book beforehand.
