Here’s a companion thread to Ruby’s eulogy to Simon and Garfunkel, where Paul Simon is quite rightly being praised as one of the great songwriters of our time.
Bridge over Troubled Water has been covered to death: anyone got a favourite version?
But what other Simon covers are there?
The great man must have been quite pleased to have the Kit doing a fine version of America for him when he received (to my mind rather ridiculous) Polar Prize.
More please. Reggae, metal, lounge, salsa: All genres welcome!

There’s The Lemonheads of course
I do like that Lemonheads track.
I don’t know if it’s in any way the best, but I love this EBTG version of ‘The Only Living Boy in New York’:
https://youtu.be/lyFm7T07V88
That’s cool -I’d forgot about their cover. They choose their covers well.
Here’s Frank attempting to go all ring-a-ding with the groovy 60s kids…it’s a horrible misjudgement.
Sir, Sir, The Bangles Sir!
I bought this single when it came out. It’s really a Rick Rubin single performed by the Bangles. In the same way that Electric was a Rick Rubin album performed by The Cult.
Anyway, I think this one gets bonus points for pissing Paul Simon off so much he went public on how much he hated it.

Love Roberta Flack’s version too.
Elvis Costello once told George Jones that there were some great modern pop songs that George could cover to which George said “Yeah, what would those be then, boy”. Elvis went away and recorded a few demos for him
Pre-eminent krishanacore act Shelter did a version of “I Am A Rock”. It probably wasn’t their finest moment.
The Church do a nice job on it, mind.

Heavy metal version of Scarborough Fayre anyone?
Simon and Metaluncle? Yes indeed!!
Phoebe Snow did a couple of great covers as well as duetting with Paul simon on Gone at Last
& here’s a bad version of Simon & Snow on Letterman
I like The Lemonheads too. I’m quite parcial to this one –
America – David Bowie at the 9 -11 local Ffreman benefit. They are Davids local ‘Watch’ apparently.

Wow. That’s fabulous. Not seen or heard that before. It’s instantly become my favourite S&G cover. His sense of theatre, the pitch of his voice and his use of that “Anthony Newley” voice, all perfect in the context.
I guess this is where we use my current favourite meme – As usual the answer is David Bowie.
Wonderful wonderful
Yes – America:
I’ve a sneaking suspicion that there will be more S & G covers than there are of his solo work.
But I may be wrong.
Here is one that not many people may know about. The arrangement doesn’t veer from the original but the voice is quite different:-
Two very different Boxers
Me first and the Gimme Gimmes

Alison Krause and Shawn Colvin
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes – one more from them, well, now

Does it count as a cover if Paul Simon appears on it? Here are the mighty Spanish Harlem Orchestra with Late In The Evening:

It certainly does! Nice one Alias!
Boy in the bubble has been covered several times,
Here’s Patti Smith’s take on it.

There seems to be a bluegrass version by the Cache Valley Drifters but it’s not on the Tube.
… and here’s Peter Gabriel’s

Have a guess which song The Wailing Souls cover…
http://youtu.be/7rEZUwz_fCg
Interestingly, they de-reggaefy it!
Robben Ford rocks up One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor.
Brad Mehldau Trio takes a break from covering Radiohead.

Still Crazy After All These Years
Paul Simon’s second eponymous album has a special place in my heart. This is my favourite song from it covered by my current favourite rock band.
Spoon – Peace Like A River
(Thanks to whomever turned me on to this. I’m very grateful.)
That was a fascinating and very varied quartet of covers. Thanks Tigger.
The Blue Aeroplanes: Boy in the Bubble

Here’s an unusual cover of You can call me Al, once again from that Polar Pricegiving.
This time, it’s top Swedish rapper Timbuktu.
The Mais que Nada Hitmaker has a crack at Scarborough Fair.
It’s turning into quite a fine tribute album. But we are NOT finished yet!
On their day Olodum were one of the greatest live bands ever. They played on the original of The Obvious Child. I was hoping to find footage of an Afro bloc doing a cover and really giving it some, and found Olodum’s own version.
I enjoyed that.
Considering that he’s holding the lyrics in his hand, the singer does rather a good job. But who is he?
I wonder how many cover versions there are of songs from Rhythm of the Saints. Not as successful as Graceland but a fine album anyway.
This is the answer to the who is he question, well almost, we now know who his mum is.
And here’s two interesting ROTS covers I discovered:
From Sweden
Does this count?
Philip Glass feat. Bernard Fowler – Changing Opinion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjtE4IBfm7I
Certainly does KDH. On a KFD thread I like contributors to interpret the OP as broadly as possible anyway. Thanks.
Whose voice do you think best suits Still Crazy After All These Years?
Karen Carpenter
Good one Tigger. Nice to see we are on the same page. I was trying to post that last night but my computer was playing up.
Still crazy is very popular among jazzers. Lots of covers.
Mrs KFD just told me that she was a great fan of the songs from the Capeman, one of Simon’s darkest hours. It did make a successful return as a concert though.

Here’s an amateur cover.

Marsha Hunt – Keep The Customer Satisfied
Just discovered/stumbled upon
That’s interesting, Rigid. The Walk on a gilded Splinter Hitmaker making a rare appearance here.
That was extremely interesting @alias although I think you’ve posted the wrong clip in the middle.
I’ve never heard of Almaz Yebio. Will try to find out more.
I had no idea that Ms Mercury, one of the sexiest women I’ve ever seen on a stage (and now married to another woman), had a son. Presumably from a previous marriage.
Those Brazilians, eh?
Certainly not the impression you get from the cover of her brilliant album Feijao Con Arroz CD, maybe I’m jumping to conclusions about gender.
Apologies for the error, this is what I meant to post. An impressive 5,000 hits for what looks like a college gig.
Those percussionists were impressive. Thanks for reposting.
Know what you mean about Daniela. I was gobsmacked to hear that.
But she’s a wonderful artist anyway.
For anyone who hasn’t heard of her :
Starts like a straight cover, and then all hell breaks loose.
The title track of S&Gs second album given a reet kicking:
I wonder if I can get away with this?
Not a cover of a PS song, but a cover of a PS video
If you’re having that, I’m having a cover (almost) of a PS title
If anyone here has never heard this, spare the ten minutes and get down. It is phenomenal!
The very talented Sarah Jarosz does Kathy’s Song.
If Kid and Rigid are going off piste, rather than getting pissed off, I’ll join them with this lovely song which openly states its inspiration from S & G.
At a “jazz” festival in Seoul!
Ron Sexsmith keeping the customers satisfied.
Miley Cyrus leaves lover shock,
Just stumbled across this.
Gorgeous! Paul Simon singing with Milton Nascimento!
Might interest @alias and @ivylander or indeed anyone interested in Paul Simon.
A very youthful looking PS, I guess that was mid 80s. Singing in Portuguese too!
I think he does rather well.
Blimey! here’s James Taylor trying out his language skills on the same song. Nana Vascelos on perscussion (the comments below are rather handy)
Introduced by Jools. The plot thickens. Must find out more.
Here’s the entire programme that the clip was taken from.

A pre-Later Jools.
A cover of American Tune by Crooked Still
An stateside friend tells me that Mandy Patinkin has done a wonderful version of An American Tune in Yiddish. Sadly it’s on neither Spotty or Youtube.
I’m always fascinated by the distant musical shores that are reached in threads like these. I haven’t travelled far enough to have visited all the above, and can only offer Harpers Bizzare (?), 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy).
Damn right Policy! When the hive mind gets buzzing, who knows where we will end up?
Wot, no Willie? (…said the virgin to the sailor)
Well if no one else will,
here’s Bob’s take on The Boxer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi3p9Vk7cTk
This version by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin is not on the interweb so I put it on. Thank me later. Schtum.

Very nice one Beany!
A real gem from the vaults!
Here are some impressions from a concert evening by Berlin band The Beez:
They invited various guests, and everyone had to do a cover version of “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” during their set (including a Beatles cover band who did it as a part of the Abbey Road medley).
