Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense has been restored with “more than 60,000 instances of dirt and scratches removed” (it says here). An 85 minute film will have 122,000 frames, so that’s roughly every other frame enhanced.
DVD and 1080p Blu-Ray with 5.1 and 2.0 audio channels of both “Feature Film mix” and “Studio mix”, whatever that means.
Apparently released last Nov 16th, but nobody told me.
The previous (non-restored) print looked pretty good in my local cinema.

Not normally a Quietus fan but this review I thought was spot on. http://thequietus.com/articles/19381-stop-making-sense-article
Good review, but they get the year of the concert(s) wrong in the first paragraph.
I think it was the first full length VHS film I bought. Also have DVD, don’t think I will upgrade.
I have the 2009 25th anniversary BluRay which was apparently restored from the original 35 mm film and appears to have that exact same audio tracks and extras
Is this one going to be any different or a significant improvement ? It was always a low light film anyway, so probably not too much they can do to improve.
Yes, I imagine it’ll be much the same but cleaned up a bit. I seem to remember at the time the BD was criticised for looking no better than the DVD (which I bought after I saw the new print at the cinema).
I’ll probably buy the restored BD this time. My kids have never seen it, and that’s all the excuse I need.
Ach shit – I saw the header and assumed The Last Waltz Uncut.
Ha! Me too
Uncut? That was Neil’s stash on the night… allegedly
It cost 100s of thousands to remove the very large gobbet of white powder in Neil’s hooter from the frames of the film.
I wouldn’t worry – this was 1970s California. That kind of expense was probably a deductable part of the film’s budget.
I got the DVD free in a Sunday paper and that is enough for me. Personally I’d settle for “Live Rust” redux.
which is also a contender for “best concert film ever made”
I saw it when it was on release at the Hammersmith Odeon with big gig style PA at gig volume. Brilliant!
I remember dragging my girlfriend at the time to watch it at the local cinema, I think there were about 5 more with us in the cinema to see Neil in one of his greatest moments. Man it was loud `n` proud. It is one concert movie I never tire of seeing but I have to say I love SMS, I have it on DVD and will have to acquire this Blu-Ray, it is IMHO the greatest concert movie ever made.
P.S. The girlfriend became a fan of `ole Neil but not of me a few years into the future!
Not sure if anything so heavily overdubbed can be considered a true ‘concert movie’, but it’s a fun watch. Each of the camera angles was recorded on separate nights, so there was a fair bit of choreography involved to make it gel.
I too assumed this was about Last Waltz. Stop Making Sense and Live rust would be place-getters.
Saw that show in San Fran then a few weeks later they came to Australia with the same show ,sans a lot of the staging.what a feast!
A bit of a downer is the news about Bernie Worrell. Saw him in the band for that movie with Meryl Streep and Rick Springfield and barely recognised him.
