Two dudes can sue because their favourite star was in the trailer but not in the actual film.
Interesting precedent, and not just because it allows us to have a go at Richard Curtis films.
Bob Dylan doesn’t appear on Sgt Pepper despite being depicted on the sleeve..

I’m rather pleased with “two dudes can sue”, by the way. It’s like a warming-up exercise for voice artists.
Cottage Pie doesn’t contain any actual cottages.
Lee Brilleaux was the only member of the original line-up of Dr Feelgood whose first name wasn’t John.
What was it?
But it was his middle name
Wilko’s replacement – Gypie Mayo- was also named John.
“Yes, that’s just the name of the shop, luv.”
‘…trailers are protected by the first amendment of the US constitution, which guarantees free speech.’ According to that logic, any old snake oil that didn’t deliver what it promised would be protected by the constitution.
I remember Dave Gorman, I think, pointing out that James Corden’s appearance in the trailer for The Lady in the Van was literally his entire 3 second appearance in the film. Though at least he was actually in the film released.
But seeing corden was in the trailer would put me off seeing the film.
Not if the trailer showed the van knocking JC down and then reversing back for a second go….
There is that.
Trainspotting – not a single steam locomotive appears on screen.
Is there a fim called Scottish Men On Heroin where the entire footage is the shunting yard at Crewe
Well it is a mainline station with several sets of tracks
Trailers need to be sent out before the final edit of the film is available so sometimes contain stuff not in the released version. Maybe all trailers in the future will now have a disclaimer saying that what follows may not be in the movie. I have mixed feelings about trailers in general, some wet the appetite, some basically show the whole thing condensed
I tend to avoid trailers. There are far too many which, as you say, Dai, give away far too much of the story.
But a trailer which contains scenes which never made the final cut is way out of order.
I remember the same thing with Marvel Comics way back in the day. The cover had to be printed first and thus sometimes contained scenes which never made it into the story.
way out of order? as I said the trailers are sent out before the final edit is done so without being able to see into the future occasionally something will be included that later ends up on the cutting room floor
Sorry, but considering the vast numbers of people involved in making even the most modest feature film, is it really beyond the wit of any one of them to say, “Wait, shall we remove that person from the trailer we remove that person from the trailer now they’re no longer in the actual film?”
Of course, given that the subject of this story is a toothsome young actress and the two people bringing the action are male, er, “film buffs” we know what’s going on here.
“I paid three dollars for a wallop. What did I get? Ed Sheeran! I am literally Nelson Mandela on Robben Island here!”
Sometimes the trailer is being shown 6 months or even a year before release, they don’t know definitively what will end up in the film. Whether they should then make another trailer for streaming services is another matter
The Wonder Woman film a couple of years ago had scenes set in 1984 and the trailer soundtracked her amazing laser-rope tricks with a very bass heavy and pow bam crash version of Blue Monday. I thought – that’s great, I’ll be wanting to see more of that!
When the film came out the music was not there. There’s a party scene where you can hear that music in the background but all the action sequences are generic orchestral whooshes. Boo !
I was very confused as a 7-year old when my Star Wars story book had images and dialogue from a cut scene with Biggs at the start. It did explain why Biggs was treated as an old friend when he popped up later in the film. Obvs the book was sent to the printers before that change was made.
I bought the last New Order album but there’s nobody playing a bass round their ankles on it. Surely thjat’s a Broken Promise.
Not forgetting those adverts for video games that say ‘not actual gameplay’ footage’. You’d think they’d be able to show it. Seems odd.
By way of contrast, I am almost always alone with a Strand.
They’ll be demanding McDonalds and other fast food purveyors start advertising their products with real examples next. Where will it end? Will there be no more women laughing at salads?
…..or indeed rollerblading…?
I have never smoked, but I’m pretty certain if I took it up I would not suddenly go hang gliding through teutonic valleys, drive Rolls-Royce Silver Shadows through lush forest in the company of impossibly beautiful women, attend opera first nights, take up sailing or wrangle horses in unforgiving rural countryside.
I suppose it would depend what you smoked. You might feel you’d done any or all of those things.
I’ve never logged into online casino websites- but according to the ads, if I did I’d be a high roller, a VIP, a confident, wealthy and successful man.
Or skint.
