Well, this is shocking, and yet not shocking at all. A man who has invited violence and insurrection for nigh on eight years almost gets hoisted by his own bloody petard…and now becomes the living martyr stood proudly and unbowed on the moral high ground.
The shite shooter has undoubtedly handed the Presidency to Trump. The MAGA goons are falling over themselves in the rush to point the finger of blame at Biden and ‘the radical left’ for inciting this…oh, the irony. You can be damned sure that they’re gonna squeeze every last cent of political capital out of this.
You will detect a distinct lack of sympathy from me for an old man whose life has just been seriously threatened. Well, #sorrynotsorry.
I just dread to think of the repercussions for America and the world come November.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
First thought – Trump hired the world’s best sniper to just miss. His team then shot the sniper. Possibly I’ve been watching too many conspiracy movies…..

I have to stay I’m astonished this hasn’t happened before. Trump and his open air rallies.
I can remember all too well the high season of US political assassinations – 1968 – RFK, Martin Luther King and the attempt on George Wallace. I was 14 and too young to have any sense of history.
Jaygee says
Wallace was in 1972, Forrest Gump was there…

Many commentators claiming that the secret service bods were at fault and should have easily spotted a crazed nut with a gun.
In that crowd ?
Mike_H says
The shooter wasn’t in the crowd, he was up on a rooftop overlooking.
Definitely a major security service cock-up.
Unless they wanted it to happen, of course…
No point the Democrats trying to get a Biden replacement now.
They’ve lost.
Slug says
Indeed, but I meant how could you spot a gun nut in a crowd of gun nuts.
Gatz says
For someone who is so enthusiastic bout People’s right to carry guns he is, sensibly enough, very careful about not letting randoms do it near him.
dai says
You have to go through airport style metal detectors to get into any position close to him.

Really?
Damn.

I’d be more interested in getting away – far, far away – from him

That’ll teach lefties to be against guns and shooting practice.

The election is not for another four months. Anyone who thinks it’s been decided by this incident, this far out needs to sit down with a nice chamomile tea, take a few deep breaths, and relax a little.
Jaygee says
Be interesting to see the post- assassination attempt OPs.
Trump was moving ahead after Biden’s disastrous debate performance
Blue Boy says
Agreed. I don’t think this changes the fact that most important thing is for Biden to stand aside. If he does and the Democrats bring in a credible candidate then it’s all still to play for.
Jaygee says
The longer they delay replacing Biden, the harder it is going to be to beat Trump
Max the Dog says
I suspect that might be off the table now, J. It would be disastrous optics and who is going to throw away their chances of being POTUS when they can keep their powder dry until 2028 – assuming that there will be an election in four years. Whatever small chance there is of the Dems have of holding the White House I think that hope still lies with the Biden / Harris ticket, unlikely as it seems. No doubt I will be proved wrong and they will make a big announcement after the Republican Convention.

Black Celebration says
Trump at the Republican conference is looking all serene and reflective.
I think he’s going to be nice, calm, wise and genial – claiming that his near death period changed him. Then he’s going to win and then basically never, ever, step down.
TrypF says
And here comes his VP nominee JD Vance:
“I was talking with a friend recently and we were talking about, you know, one of the big dangers in the world, of course, is nuclear proliferation, though, of course, the Biden administration doesn’t care about it. And I was talking about, you know, what is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon, and we were like, maybe it’s Iran, you know, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts, and then we sort of finally decided maybe it’s actually the UK, since Labour just took over.”
MC Escher says
Hmm, nothing to say about Trump dropping out of the Iran nuclear deal? Which has accelerated Iran’s nuclear capability somewhat.
Kaisfatdad says
Excellent quote @TrypF
And this is chilling too:
“Speaking on a podcast with Trump ally Steve Bannon in 2022, Vance said: “I don’t really care what happens in Ukraine one way or the other.”

Twang says
Trump will certainly milk this for all it’s worth so perhaps the Dems will see sense and put up a fully functional candidate in response.

As if being shot at wasn’t bad enough, Trump now has Liz Truss and Russell Brand in his corner. Sometimes it feels like we’re living in a parallel universe where everything sensible has been turned on its head and replaced by complete bollocks.

No real post-assassination attempt bounce in the polls for Trump, but approval figures
for JB’s continued candidacy are in free fall – down from 64% before the debate
to 35% now.
Wonder if the Dems will attempt to steal Trump’s thunder ahead of tonight’s
Acceptance speech by announcing that, the Almighty being unavailable, JB’s
Doctor has pronounced him too unwell to continue his re-election campaign.
Captain Darling says
I was thinking the same thing. Could Covid give Joe a good excuse to drop out and save face? Surely by now even he can see that enough’s enough, and the Dems have got to make sure they have a better chance of beating Trump before it’s too late (if it’s not already).
Every day it seems like a portion of the US is slipping ever further into insanity. Trump’s supporters wearing bandages on their ears. The guy who said Trump could be America’s Hitler (and who thinks the UK is an Islamist state and can’t be bothered about Ukraine) agreeing to be his VP. States putting the Ten Commandments in every public building (and if you don’t like it, you can “look away”, apparently). The worsening abortion bans. Etc., etc.
I’ve enjoyed my trips to the US, and the people I met were generally great, but I can’t help thinking that millions of them are sleepwalking into a disaster that will ruin their country for many years to come and maybe make things worse for a lot of others too.
C’mon Dems, do something solid about winning the election – and not by just a few votes.
Phew. I’m going for a lie down.
Jaygee says
Rather than thinking of him as America’s Hitler, I think Vance has started to view Trump as being America’s Ernst Röhm

I note that a grocery store somewhere in Texas has just installed the first fully-automatic ammunition vending machine.
As an American friend elsewhere remarked, the next time Texas threatens to secede from the Union, the rest of the USA should offer to help pack their bags.
