It is a very funny article ….but mostly completely unfair!!
Page and Plant’s use of the hurdy gurdy was sublime.
But the guy from Korn playing the bagpipes was a travesty. I was passing the Orange Stage at Roskilde when he did that and suffered great pain as a result.
No mention of the accordion? Has that fine instrument finally been accepted??
I honestly can’t even remember a hurdy gurdy on Gallows Pole? Going to have to listen to it again to find it.

He must be! I saw them live in Stockholm and they had a hurdy gurdy and a lot more besides. They spent a lot of money on that tour and all of it was spent on getting in superb musicians to play with them

The Page and Plant collaboration stuff in the 90s might be due a reappraisal. I know at the time I was a bit sniffy about it – it just seemed to me like two old (“old” – ha!) guys trying to cash in on their reputation, and poor man’s Led Zep.
Now, it’s actually sounding mighty fine. And also quite indicative of Plant’s subsequent direction.
Most High was (is) a terrific song.
I’ve been foraging and there are several rather fine clips from P & P during the mid 90s.

Harsh. The last 3 gigs I have been to: Rosalind Cunningham, gong/ Ozric tentacles, and focus – all featured the flute. The next gig is”the musical box”, which means more flute. I’m thinking I should see Lizzo to keep the flute thing going.

I agree, a Tull fan writes. I never need to hear another claghorn though.
I think most instruments can work if used in the right way. Even the kazoo. Excess use such as a fiddle or harmonium can be wearing. We know who the culprits are. Somebody thinks they’ve got a winning combo and does it to death. Too much sax in the 80s, among other sins. The human voice is an instrument of course and the most varied, as well as the hardest to bear when the music listener takes against it.

Although it is fascinating how sounds which to one listener are exquisite, to another are a cacophony.
I find the Indonesian gamelan rather hard work. I’ve seen a couple of gamelan orchestras at the Roskilde Festival and with at least one of them, it all clicked for me and I really enjoyed the show. All the joy, energy and virtuosity of the musicians hit the spot for me.
The world will be a better place without the flute. Get rid of vibes and it will be betterer.

Flutes – all that pootling all sounds the same and lacks any variation in sound. And this is someone who has seen Herbie Mann and ver Tull.
Vibes – yes trot out your MJQ , your Gary Burton I’ve got their vinlys too but when it comes down to it far too wan. The only one with any panache is Roy Ayers.

Yebbut there’s a flute on Ghost Town, so they’re not all bad.

It’s all going pretty well – tomorrow I’ll have completed five weeks out of six – Monday to Friday. It’s akin to what I imagine a full time job must be like.
Just the one side effect: a slight radiation burn – the top of my head is reddened and a bit flakey. I’m slathering on the E45 cream as if it’s about to be declared illegal…
