As you’ll probably know, Boxzilla (The Bob version) contains 379 tracks spread over 18 CDs – everything from the studio recordings in 1965/66. I’ve had it for a few weeks now and it has occupied my waking hours fairly completely. Last night, about an hour after I finally got to the far end, I got an e-mail:
Dear Collector,
We hope you are enjoying The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Volume 12: Collector’s Edition. Thanks again for your purchase!
The holidays are coming early for you via a special gift from Columbia Records: 208 tracks encompassing more than ten hours of previously unreleased live Bob Dylan performances from his landmark 1965 tours, including 14 complete concerts – both acoustic and electric – and an array of recordings from television shows, hotel rooms, and other live appearances.
These live performances are being offered as a free download (in 320 Kbps MP3 format) exclusively to purchasers of the Collector’s Edition.
To redeem your download …
So, that’s 208 more tracks of Bob downloaded… of variable quality, and obviously in the main a copyright protection trick: but if you were dithering over whether to go for the big box this might tip you over the edge. There are still several hundred available from the website, apparently.

What with moving and everything, I genuinely haven’t even got through the 2-CD version.
That said, with Bob especially, less is DEFINITELY more…..otherwise people would listen to ‘Empire Burlesque’, ‘Knocked Out Loaded’ and the one with a sex pistol (or was it two?) on it.

Perhaps tangentially inspired by the Get Back movie, I’ve been listening back to the two disc version of the Cutting Edge that I got when it came out in 2015.
A lot of good stuff on it. But it sounds like there is even more tantalising stuff on the 18 disc set. Especially the multiple takes showing the development of Like A Rolling Stone. And these additional live recordings sound very interesting indeed.
Still, I only paid for the two disc version so I need to live with that and I should be happy with it.
I’M GLAD THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A WAY TO EXCHANGE AUDIO FILES WITH PEOPLE ONLINE, OTHERWISE DANGEROUS THINGS MIGHT HAPPEN. FOR EXAMPLE, PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE 18 DISC VERSION AND THE LIVE DOWNLOADS TRYING TO SHARE THESE WITH ME.
