A mere 16 years after their last album – surely some kind of record in itself – the long awaited and much delayed Songs Of A Lost World will finally appear on 1st November
I for one am very much looking forward to hearing it as the songs they premiered on last year’s tour were very good indeed…..

Crikey. Somewhat overwrought, cheery C-beams anthem. All those moments will be lost in time, and all that. Epic. Melancholic. Set the controls for the heart of the mellotron. He’s still got it, if that’s your thing. Can’t help thinking, 3 minutes into the circular riff with no lyric yet in sight, that I’d prefer to hear 10:15 On A Saturday Night, mind. Once the words do arrive, I can’t read them through the tears in rain. Have to say that I admire Robert for having the balls to still do this stuff, it’s pretty magnificent in its own special way.

I like The Cure and (quite) like this new song after two listens, but am slightly bemused at the (apparent) massive enthusiasm with which their new material is being anticipated, as their last album, 4:13 Dream back in 2008, was a sizeable flop (didn’t make the top 30, no hit singles)… is it the 16-year absence making the heart grow fonder, or is it just better marketing?

Don’t know about UK/Europe but they are massive in North America, at least as a live act

Indeed, when in New York recently I was genuinely surprised to see that they were playing Madison Square Gardens…not once, but twice! I like their singles generally but could never really take them ‘seriously’. People used to say Americans liked singers whereas we in the UK liked people who made funny noises. Seems to be inaccurate these days…

I saw them in Copenhagen’s enormodone, which was easily like earls court or the O2, so yes, massive in Europe too.

I like this a lot. The intro could be a touch shorter, but the pay off of that voice makes it all worthwhile. Looking forward to the album as I enjoyed the last one, despite feeling like I was in the minority on that front.

Triffic! Ooodles of Grand Guignol and lashings of melodrama. (Love the description of the 2 different styles of Bob, in the Graun review, definitely preferring the doleful dirges to peppy pop. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/sep/26/the-cure-alone-review?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other )

A friend just sent me this mail:
“A quote from a Robert Smith NME interview which seems to sum up the marvellousness of the man:
Despite having no kids of his own, Robert Smith lavishes gifts on his nephews and nieces, taking them to Euro Disney every Christmas. He recalls: “Minnie Mouse coming up to me and asking me for my autograph with all the children looking on in absolute amazement was one of the best and most disturbing moments of my life.”
The man is a national treasure!

Presumably he was in full make up?
Captain Darling says
Isn’t he always, always in full make-up?
Imagine Robert Smith enjoying a bright sunny day while going make-up free. It might well be a portent of the End of Times.

The Cure are a band I often forget I like and I go years without listening to them. But this is flipping magnificent. Absurd yes, but magnificent.

Loudest band I have ever heard. After well into the third hour we had to leave – and this is someone whose first show was Deep Purple.
A more fun occasion was seeing them in local smallish room in suburban Melbourne. Think BDC had been released and they were playing some songs from 17 secs. No make up. Great little band for a door entry of 5 bucks.
This newie is a good song and its great they are still going.

Saw them on the last tour at what now seems like quite reasonably priced First Direct Arena, and the “new” song fitted in well with the “old”.
So glad they finally bothered to get the album out.

Very much my kind of Cure song – I love this.
