Not intended as a review but I am at 30,000 feet between Detroit and Denver and found The Cure at Hyde Park video on the in flight entertainment. I have never been a huge fan over the years – a “just the hits” kind of knowledge of them but DAMN THEY ARE GOOD.
40 years in – still looking ludicrously rock and roll – 60 odd years old and THAT hair. In great voice and the vibe is still there and they seem to be loVing every minute. How our rock stars should get old.
I believe there is a new album coming in 2020?

Welcome!
It’s a fantastic film. Everything I’ve read suggests Robert’s intention was a strong walk through the highlights (with the accompanying ‘Cureation 25’ in the DVD set as the ‘deep cuts’), so you’re the target audience, as it were.
Robert’s been spruiking new albums in various stages of completion for 10 years, so I wouldn’t hold your breath. They’ve been content to pretty much headline festivals in that time, something which had made me go cool on them somewhat, but after the Disintegration show at the Sydney opera House last year, along with the recent two DVDS, the love affair is very much back on.
robert’s also been claiming a remastered/box set of Wish, and the release of the (both excellent) In Orange and Wish concert films, none of which show signs of happening in the real world. He’s always purported not to have a manager, so he genuinely seems to operate on a whim and without any strategic career marketing plan.
And on that claim, that can’t be right surely? I know there’s no Elliot Roberts, Jon Landau, Paul McGuiness-style figure ‘at the helm’, but you’d have to have someone at least in an admin, gatekeeper type role at a purely practical level? Always been curious; anyone know?

I’d buy “Orange”. But then again Concert is possibly my favourite album (this week). Havent seen the Hyde Park show, but I played the Glastonbury set a lot on Iplayer. I thought they were in great form.

Would love to see them live, but he really should have got rid of that hair and lipstick look several decades ago.

Oh, I dunno. I imagine it’s pretty grim under all that.
Besides, Simon Gallup aside, they’re hardly the most active performers; all the hair and makeup helps them play to the back of the hall.

And when he takes it off and in civvies, he looks like Johnny Vegas.
To be fair, I look like a variant on uncle Monty, so I can say stuff like that.

Hmmm
I look like James Dean and you can bounce ping pong balls off my bum

Saw them oooooh about 4 years ago. Rather long at over 4 hours and fookin loud. But very good.
I too have no interest in seeing Smith unmasked. Will be just another pale, porky Pom.

my ex has been good mates with his nephew and niece since school and she said seeing him without his ‘Cure’ face on in the kitchen at their 18th birthday party many years ago was something of a shock.

He can probably go to Tescos without being bothered.

Looking at the size of him these days you’d have to get him out of Greggs first.

I’m no massive fan, especially post-Wish, but in the last few months I’ve bought the 2LP Disintegration and half-speed mastered 2LP Mixed Up. Not bad sales for a band with no “new”.

The 3 cd deluxe Disintegration and the 2 cd Faith are being reissued next month.

I saw them on their first tour in 1979 at Witcombe Lodge near Gloucester. They were still a trio back then and I thought they were amazing. The drummer (was it Lol?) had a see-through kit with these incredibly bright lights behind him shining through the drums.

I may have mentioned previously that I saw them in a small suburban pub in Melbourne in 1980 or 81. 3 bucks entry.

I went to the Hyde Park gig and it was absolutely awesome. I also enjoyed the fact I was one of the younger people attending (i’m 48!!). Got chatting to a lovely bloke on the train who has been going to see them since the 70’s and he said that was the first time they had played Killing an Arab in aeons
