What does it sound like?:
At my age, It is great to discover a new group, and suddenly become a little obessed. Even better if they have a back catalogue
The Courettes are the marriage between a Dane (Martin Thorsen) and Brazilian (Flavia Couri) over their shared love of 60s music. The obvious comparison is the White Stripes, but switched. She plays the guitar and sings while he drums and adds occasional support vocals.
I only discovered them as they played my home town, a relativly rare event. They seem to have forged their reputation through regular touring with energetic shows. Explosive is the description from their PR and it was a great night out
This fourth album, moves on from the Spector influenced “Back in Mono” There are more variety of instruments and wider 1960s styles
However the old fans will be still happy with the grarage sound of the opener – You Woo Me
The last album saw a classic girl group tribute to Ringo. However now Flavia has moved on to Charlie Watts. Rolling Stones songs are name checked and there is a typical spoken part “sorry Richard. . “
SHAKE! and Keep Dancing are both singles with a dance beat. I love that no track overstays it welcome and have simple titles
My favourite is California, a summer separation heartbreak song. Backing vocals come from the 1960s pop royalty, La La Brooks from the Crystals. She later reappears with lead vocals on Run Run Away.
So 13 songs in under 45 minutes. What’s not to love ?
What does it all *mean*?
1960s style music can still be produced without being a pastiche or cliche
Goes well with…
Nostalgia
Release Date:
Now
Might suit people who like…
The White Stripes, Sonics, Ramones and Crystals
Go on, post a music clip now….
See if this works ?
About 1 minute too long, but otherwise that’s fine energetic pop.
Seems to have worked, so here is an early song.
Re: the White Stripes comparison. He’s a better drummer than Meg.
The other song is better IMO. Played and sung better too.
Slightly reminiscent of The Rezillos.
Charmingly naive!
Have been a fan for a while, having seen them live a couple of times now and they are a cracking live band.
Discovered these a while ago and have been keeping an eye. A band very much in the Milkshakes/Billy Childish/Prisoners vein, who look an absolute hoot live if their youtube clips are anything to go by. I must go see them this time.
Stumbled across this t’other month, and firmly agree with the statement: “At my age, It is great to discover a new group, and suddenly become a little obsessed. Even better if they have a back catalogue”
Gradually devoting the shelf space
I could buy it all in one go, but (a) would need to explain expenses to Mrs D, and (b) enjoying discovery and digesting each on it’s own merits rather than overload listening)
