Jeepers MiniB!
Back in the mid eighties, down the pub,we’d wondered what a really rubbish light entertainment Live Aid would be like and had the name for it “Naffrica”
Even the line up is similar.
I love that she’s lessened the reverb, has made something more human. I love that she’s one of the few artists in the world who has mastered the trick of making a pop song be more than one melody, be more than one idea, be more than one listening experience.
This popped up on my Spotify Discover list, and I really like it. They’re from London, but they’re channelling their inner Bruce (or Little Steven) very effectively.
By the way @el-hombre-malo, great shout with the Ray Charles pick. I have been scouring the ‘net for the piece of film from the wonderful Life On Mars, when they used Frankie’s original, but to no avail.
The song was always one my my favourite Frankie tracks, that often got swamped during listening sessions by my mates wanting Be Good To Yourself or Jealous Guy. So, when I was 4 episodes into what was already the best thing I’d seen on British telly in years, and this came on, I was hit by a sledgehammer. It wasn’t a slow, gradual thing, one that you can disguise, look away and get away with. The gut-wrenching scene with the dead girl, Sam walking away, and then that piano figure (Barry Andrews, no less,) had me choking tears before Wee Frankie even sang, “My friends can’t find…”
Amazing how Ray turns it into a pure blues arrangement. Great shout. http://youtu.be/XJCL48LOILU
A bit behind the times, but I’ve recently noticed that the Violent Femmes have reappeared with their first new music for 15 years in the shape of the “Happy New Year” (that’s when it was recorded) EP.
Very much enjoying the Sufjan Stevens album “Carrie & Lowell”
This star-studded affair was brought to my attention yesterday, thanks to @wholehogg, and is truly amazeballs:

I like this one too from their first album. think it may have been included in a Word CD once upon a time.
@fitterstoke My work here is done. ?
Ian McNabb – Hurricane Elaine…..from the new album.

This month I have been mainly hitting the replay button on this;
So sad, so beautiful and somehow, still comforting. Daniel Norgren – “Everything You Know Melts Away Like Snow”:
And just about any moment from Seinabo Sey’s gig at Popaganda, here’s “Younger”:

Here’s my favourite track of it
