I’ll leave some stats, to demonstrate where my head is:
Albums: thirty
Heard: zero
Heard of the artistes: er…seven…
H.P. Saucecraft says
Did Utopia Strong’s latest waxing (feat. Steve “Interesting” Davis) make the list? Probs not because it’s fab.
fitterstoke says
Bit proggy – so probably too “pretentious” to make the Guardian list…
Moose the Mooche says
Five months is half a year now? Mmmkay…
fitterstoke says
Oh well, if you’re going to let the laws of physics get in the way of a list…
Moose the Mooche says
The engines cannae take it!!
Gary says
I’ve bought all of them, am very happy with my purchases and totes agree with The Guardian’s ranking.
Nah, not really. I’m very impressed you’ve heard of 7.
I will be checking out that Horace Andy one though.
fitterstoke says
Same here – it’s the only one where I’m tempted to get my wallet oot…
fentonsteve says
It’s good as, I think Retro, mentioned in in last month’s Takeover.
retropath2 says
It is.
Rigid Digit says
I own 2 – it would be 3 but I can’t ready myself for more disappointment with Father John Misty
Black Type says
Well I ❤️ it, so there!
Sewer Robot says
Heard of 17*.
Heard 9.
Rate highly 0 (although Horace Andy does indeed have its moments as does Yard Act).
(*Just a statistic – not some old duffer’s complaint. Perfectly reasonable that I have no knowledge of some Mexican 24 year old’s debut, the interpretative works of a jazz lady or that awful metal racket critics are all jizzing over.
Seriously, every year, ignore the names and just scroll down the genres of the top 20 on the Album Of The Year site: metal, death metal, jazz metal, very metal, meta metal, I can’t believe it’s not metal, because, well, it just f*cking is..).
fitterstoke says
On-U metal? A new genre…defuse the ticking time bomb of metal…
Moose the Mooche says
There’s something wrooooooooong with Human Metal!
fitterstoke says
Billy Bonds MBE – Metal Mix
Moose the Mooche says
John Donne and George Herbert – Metal-physical poets
rob says
I love the Eric Chenaux record, it will be close to the top of my albums of the year I expect.
Col D says
Don’t own a single one but will buy the Alison Cotton when it’s released in a week or so.
Tiggerlion says
There is something for everyone on this list: Jazz, Hip Hop, Pop, Electronica, Reggae, Folk, Garage, Punk, Rock, Dance, it caters for all tastes. Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar and Weeknd are among the best known music stars in the world, so you can hardly describe it as deliberately obscure. The idea is to generate interest for some quality product. Time spent sampling these albums on the streaming service of your choice will not be wasted. Sadly, Nat Birchall is not included but Leyla McCalla is and they are quite right about Kurt Vile.
rob says
Totally agree about the Kurt Vile record, it’s the other one on the list that I own. Very much looking forward to seeing him play at the Moseley Folk Festival later in the summer.
fitterstoke says
No negative agendum from me – just posted for the interest and diversion of the troops assembled herein…
Baron Harkonnen says
‘There is something for everyone on this list’, no there is not Tiggs. I’ve heard of 9 of them, actually bought albums by 2 of them in the past (Kurt V. & F. J. Misty, got shut of the albums when I tired of them)…..and I will not be buying any of those listed. So dear Tiggs you are wrong.
I have bought many NEW albums this year, 50%+ by NEW to me artists. So I ain’t afraid to venture out into the world of sound.
That list after having sampled tracks from over half the albums listed (none good) is simply a poseur’s look at me list.
Tiggerlion says
Really? I had you all over Nilüfer Yanya 😉!
Baron Harkonnen says
👍🎶🤣🥃
Junior Wells says
@Tiggerlion if they are right about Kurt Vile , can you explain what “sounds like a wise man who doesn’t have the answers” means.
Tiggerlion says
A wise man knows his limitations and doesn’t pretend to have any solutions to the world’s problems.
😎

I may have mentioned this previously, but my favourite ever letter to a magazine was submitted to the short lived (but pretty good) “Ikon” at the tail end of the 90s.
It went something like this: “I greatly enjoyed the extended article about Eric Cantona in last month’s issue. Nonetheless, I came away from it slightly bemused by a few of the descriptions of Eric’s undoubtedly impressive achievements. I have been an Old Trafford season ticket holder my entire adult life, and have seen every game Cantona has played, home and away for the last few seasons, but I don’t believe I recall seeing him “ride a rhinoceros through a city of upside down broken dreams”, nor do I recall the occasion on which he apparently “taught a parrot the art of the sonnet”. It’s possible that these incidents occurred when I nipped to the loo shortly before half time, in which case that’s just typical of my luck”.
Still sat here getting a kick out of it two decades and change later.
Moose the Mooche says
Barney Ronay was plying his trade that long ago…?
Boneshaker says
Well I’ve heard of 3 of them and own just one (Father John Misty). I’ve probably bought fewer albums this year than at any other time since I was about 12. I am, of course, very old.
Locust says
I own six of those (well, two are in the mail, but technically I do), but ironically I’ve never heard of the two Swedes on the list!
fitterstoke says
Ah, yes: but will they appear in your end of year “best” list?
Locust says
If I knew that now, I’d use my gift to win big on betting! 😀
Uncle Wheaty says
Whatever. I am not bothered.
fitterstoke says
Hi, Unc: glad you could make it!! 🥳
duco01 says
Nice to see the Leyla McCalla album “Breaking the Thermometer” being mentioned.
It’s a thoroughly absorbing set – a big improvement over the rather drab proselytising of her previous effort, “The Capitalist Blues”.
murkey says
Heard of: 15
Heard: 0 or 1 – I have a feeling I listened to the Melt Yourself Down album
H.P. Saucecraft says
I am disappoint Yyyyyrglåndottir Müüskrœtum’s long awaited sophomore album “O! I Am The Despair Herring!” didn’t make the list. Also The Dulls’ debut “Lockdown Laments And Hymnals For The New Isolation”, which ticks all the Afterword-friendly boxes with its guest appearances by Posh Bint In Hat (drone hurdy-gurdy) and Colin Harper on Uillean zither.
fitterstoke says
At first glance, I thought the above post was satirical…
…but no! Posh Bint in Hat has a new album out on Bandcamp this week, called “Under the BumGun”…
H.P. Saucecraft says
Informed by grieving for her spirit animal (“Over The Rainbow Bridge My Translucent Stoaty Darling” is dedicated to they) and the break-up of her long-term partnership with NObinar X-Y (of Pitchfork darlings The Melting Diaspora Of All My Saddest Dreams And), “Under The BumGun” is a stark and harrowing meditation on loss and identity in a post-pandemic transgender world.
retropath2 says
Bum gun: is that the combined jacksie telescope with stapler combo?
Possibly the wrong social medium.
H.P. Saucecraft says
No, and yes.
Moose the Mooche says
Jacksie Telescope – TMFTL
PS. Doesn’t he trust you? …if you’re familiar with that punchline I hope you’re ashamed of yourself
hubert rawlinson says
Jacksie Telescope supported by The Stapler Combo.

Prefer this list. Gotta have Pusha T and particularly the Vince Staples album – so good.
H.P. Saucecraft says
HAHAHA!!!! Brilliant, Bing!
Oh – wait –
Sewer Robot says
..and I say unto you, in the days before the end comes, the skies will rain with blood, the seas will boil and foam, savage plagues and pestilence will sweep the land and.. the one named Bingo will venture forth opinions on whole albums like his pop ADHD just magically disappeared with the first grey pube..
Moose the Mooche says
Will this wind be so mighty as to lay low the mountains of the Earth?
Bingo Little says
Actually, I’ll have you know that I’m currently in the process of compiling an exhaustive list of the best albums of the year, strictly assessed according to a set of objective measures of craft, musicianship and beard length which should suffice to put to bed all dispute as to…. oooh, look: Winston Surfshirt and Talib Kweli have dropped an awesome Summertime jam just in time for the nice weather. Enjoy.
Sewer Robot says
Tune❤️
Winston Surfshirt sounds like a name Bri would come up with to try sneaking back past the Mods..
Moose the Mooche says
Change it to Smurfshirt and that’s spot on.
PS. What’s blue, smelly and never surrenders?
Winston Smurfshit.
…..kayndly leave the stage
H.P. Saucecraft says
Bing, I want you to know I appreciate your enthusiasm for the music of a younger generation than your own. It does you great credit, “getting down with the kids” and Dad Dancing at festivals. “You’re only as young as you feel!” as the saying goes, and you certainly have your finger on the pulse of the nation’s youth! I also respect your judgement and taste, and it was in an honest attempt to broaden my musical horizons that I sought out and listened to pop records by Pusha T and Vince Staples. I can say in all honesty that I was not disappointed!
Kid Dynamite says
Pleased to see that they have picked up on the Soul Glo album, which is the best punk record in years. They’re playing Bristol in September and I fully expect it to go off.
