What does it sound like?:
I posted a reaction on here to news of this release a little while ago – I was surprised then at the scale and scope of this archive issue, and it still surprises me that this is happening, given the recent direction of releases and availability of CDs and the recent history of Beach Boys releases of this type which have been purely digital rather than physical. Of course, the vinyl release fetish seems to rumble on, but more of all this later.
So, what do we have here? ‘Feel Flows’ is a reissue/remaster with associated archive recordings mostly from around the time of the Beach Boys albums ‘Sunflower’ and Surf’s Up’ – the first two albums to be released after they left Capitol and signed for Warners. I say ‘mostly’ because the set also includes live versions of ‘Sunflower’ and ‘Surf’s Up’ songs, some of which are from years outside of the recording dates. It is a treasure trove for Beach Boys fans.
The 5 CD set consists of a disc for each album containing a remaster of the original LP, then some live versions and outtakes from the recording sessions. There are then discs for each album of ‘Sessions’ – these are mostly backing tracks and then isolated vocals (labelled as ‘acapella’ versions). Finally there is a so-called ‘bonus disc’ of alternate versions, demos, oddities, and some stray tracks that would find their way onto future albums.
This was a period of some upheaval for the group and proved pivotal in their history. Capitol didn’t have a clue what to do with a band that, to them, was so rooted in their past with all the hits from the early to mid 60s. Their following in the US had dropped off a cliff (20/20, their last Capitol album had only sold a reported 18,000 copies, and ‘Do It Again’ had performed poorly) – they were seen as desperately uncool, but their popularity abroad continued unabated. As the sleeve notes attest, it was this that convinced the band they still had a future.
The individuals were now family men, and this also gave them a life outside of the band. They also all say what a happy time it was for them to work together, with Carl, Dennis and Al all starting to contribute more songs and musical ideas, whilst they also accommodated Brian so that he could contribute as well. This diversity can be heard on both ‘Sunflower and ‘Surf’s Up’, whilst this archive set particularly reveals the contribution Dennis was making with his song writing, although many of these were held back at the time.
For those familiar with ‘Sunflower’ it seems to defy logic that this album only reached 151 in the US charts: it arguably has the best opening 3 songs of any BB album – ‘Slip On Through’, ‘This Whole World’ and the superb ‘Add Some Music To Your Day’. However, there are then a few tracks of less than stellar quality (‘Got To Know The Woman’, ‘Deidre’, for instance) that rather spoil things before things pick up again with ‘Tears in The Morning’ onwards, including the transcendent Dennis masterpiece, ‘Forever’.
The ‘Sunflower’ outtakes include a couple of songs that would emerge on future albums (‘Susie Cincinnati’, ‘Loop De Loop’, and ‘Good Times’), as well as the 1969 single ‘Break Away’ and a remix of ‘Cotton Fields’.
The ‘Sunflower Sessions’ disc has tracking and backing vocal sessions for the album in sequence, along with some of the outtake songs, a couple of alternate mixes (‘Cool Cool Water’ and ‘Slip On Through’), and some gorgeous versions with just vocals – just listen to ‘Add Some Music To Your Day and ‘Forever’ and hear those harmonies.
Between ‘Sunflower’ and ‘Surf’s Up’, newly recruited co-manager Jack Rieley strove to revamp the group’s image and restore their public reputation following the dismal reception to their recent albums and tours. This new approach would emerge on ‘Surf’s Up’.
‘Surf’s Up’ included Carl’s first major song contributions, ‘Long Promised Road’ and ‘Feel Flows’, and was much more even in terms of song quality than its predecessor. To start off with the song ‘Don’t Go Near The Water’ after the closer of ‘Cool Cool Water’ on ‘Sunflower’ was, as well as being a great song, an immediate indicator of being in different territory for the band. The closing masterpieces of ‘Til I Die’ and ‘Surf’s Up’ seal this as one of, if not the, best BB album. Brian was apparently reluctant to include ‘Surf’s Up’ at first, but was persuaded to finish it by Rieley – it absolutely fits with the ecology based themes in many of the songs. If you have never heard this album, then please do – it never fails to astonish me 50 years on.
Some nice live versions are included, and again we get some outtakes and remixes – ‘Big Sur’ would be held over until ‘Holland’, and does include the ‘My Solution’ oddity (reminds me of Mt Vernon and Fairway….yes, it’s that awful).
The ‘Surf’s Up’ Sessions disc follows the ‘Sunflower’ pattern – backing tracks and vocals in the album order, and then we get a new remix of the song ‘Surf’s Up’, which is just wonderful, and Dennis’s ‘(Wouldn’t It Be Nice To) Live Again’ which was criminally left off the album – it is superb – as is the long version of ‘Til I Die’ with alternate lyrics. The vocal only versions of ‘Til I Die’ and ‘Surf’s Up’ are predictably beautiful.
The 5th ‘Bonus Tracks’ CD gives us some alternate versions and mixes from both albums as well as more outtakes, most of which are certainly worth hearing – the pick of these are ‘I’m Going Your Way’ (although not typical Beach Boys), ‘It’s Natural’, ‘All My Love Ecology’, ‘Won’t You Tell Me’, and an early version of ‘Cuddle Up’ (here called ‘Old Movie’) which is terrific, and a vocal only version of ‘Marcella’, both of which would appear on the next album. The piano demo version of ‘Til I Die’ is fascinating. As bonus discs go, this is definitely one of the best, and there is lots to enjoy here.
In summary, rather obviously you will want to hear this if you are a Beach Boys fan, and you won’t be disappointed. I found myself repeatedly listening to these discs and just revelling in the new insights into the songs.
For more casual listeners, all this will be on streaming anyway, but there are other configurations (as listed below). Annoyingly, the 5CD set does not include quite everything on the other sets – again, see below. The book (which I was given in pdf format) is mostly quotes from the band and doesn’t really address the recording sessions in detail – some nice pictures though.
The recent Mark Linett interview posted on this site was very revealing concerning the archive issue programme – it seems that the main drivers were the European 50 year copyright ruling and the fact that the Beach Boys actually own all of their tapes, including interim masters which have largely been preserved – this enables them to issue backing tracks and vocal only tracks as well as enabling remixes.
Roll on the next set!

What does it all *mean*?
Even at their lowest ebb in the US, the creative sparks still flew and they made some of their greatest music.
Goes well with…
Release Date:
27th August
Might suit people who like…
Beach Boy fans (obviously) but also those who only know the hits.
Thank you! Great review. Delayed a month it seems. Only have the 2 disc CDs on pre-order currently, 5 disc too pricey and the vinyl is weird (bonus tracks at the end of each original side)
Surf’s Up for me is 9/10 (Student Demonstration Time and Take a Load of your Feet weaken it). Pet Sounds being 10/10, Sunflower maybe 8/10. Surf’s Up may be the best “group” album, but regarding the run from Today! past these albums to Carl and the Passions,/Holland (inc SMiLE) it’s all pretty great.
Th 5CD set has come down a bit since the first announcement.
I have seen that, but still too much. 50 quid or $80 Canadian then I might get interested.
If only they’d taken off Student Demonstration Time and Take a Load Off Your Feet and put on 4th of July and (Wouldn’t It Be Nice to) Live Again.
But then it wouldn’t be the Beach Boys without a bit of infighting and tantrums behind the scenes
At least this boxset means you can make your own ‘lost’ version playlists on Spotify
Nice review @NigelT, I don`t agree with everything you say about this release but that is down to personal opinion.
This bit is incorrect: “the fact that the Beach Boys actually own all of their tapes, including interim masters which have largely been preserved – this enables them to issue backing tracks and vocal only tracks as well as enabling remixes.”
Due to this `Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists Group has acquired a controlling stake in the Beach Boys’ intellectual property, including the band’s sound recordings, brand, select musical compositions, and memorabilia`
`However much of the band’s evergreen 1960s-era catalog remains owned by Universal Music Group, which acquired Beach Boys recordings via the $1.9bn buyout of EMI Music in 2012.`
But: `The Beach Boys and their heirs will retain an interest in their assets “to participate in the upside Iconic expects to create by actively marketing and promoting” the band.`
Iconic payed between $100-200 million for the rights. In my opinion this is a good thing because one of the reasons we are seeing the `Feel Flows` is due to the buy out. I also think we will get a `Carl & The Passions/Holland` box set next, there are also multiple tracks in the vaults of quality that deserve a release, hopefully physical.
Back to the `Feel Flows` release there are many songs of beauty on this box set, this indeed was a fertile time for the Beach Boys. Probably their creative peak.
Thanks Baron. Maybe I misunderstood the interview with Mark Linett.
I would think a `Carl & The Passions/Holland` box set is pretty nailed on – I hope so anyway as Holland is one of my favourite albums.
I think I bought Holland before Surf`s Up back in the 70`s, it was the first Beach Boys LP I bought since Pet Sounds. I then worked my way back getting Surf`s Up & Sunflower on the same day. I was bloody astonished when I first played them, how had this beautiful music passed me by!
The Beach Boys are probably the most underrated band to that has achieved fame and fortune. For 99% of the music loving world they are best known for their Greatest Hits albums especially 1974`s Endless Summer which put them back in the spotlight in the USA.
I fell in love with Holland when a friend played it to me and he subsequently bought it for me as a present. I actually owned very little Beach Boys material up until then…I was obviously aware of all the hits, but had never bought anything (my sister had the 3 ‘best ofs’). I then went back and filled in other albums. There was a long article in NME at the time which made me aware of what I was missing too…by Nick Kent perhaps? I then saw them at Wembley and was amazed at the live act too.
Endless Summer was a mixed blessing I think – it reminded America of them, but the original albums from 15 Big Ones onwards, I think, tried to play to that audience.
Thank you for such a detailed review.
I’ve ordered the 2CD version. Does that mean I am only getting seventeen seconds of Breakaway? That could be a deal breaker as it’s one of my absolute favourite BB records.
Yep – although the 5 CD set says it’s 18 secs! Just listened to to it again and it is indeed very short.
At least you get the whole of the original 1969 mix on the five disc set.
Disappointing. Almost as much as not having a full Niles remix of Old Brown Shoe or the Revolution B side.
Cuh!
First two BBs albums I bought and have loved them to bits ever since. Like many posters here settled for the 2CD version as past experience shows will only play discs 3 and 4 once at most, . Am sure some kindly AWer will be happy to help us cure our irritating disc 5 ticklish cough….
@NigelT thanks for a great review – I had been pondering placing an order for this earlier in the week but was baulking at the price. However just got good bonus news at work so think will be going for it.
If as Baron suggests we get a Carl and the Passions/Holland box then that would be really exciting –
Holland being my favourite BB album.
Holland is the one that had me on a soapbox, proclaiming the worth of the band, at a time all my friends still only had the mfp All Summer Long 99p disc. Then I got Live, Surfs Up and only then, Pet Sounds. Love them. Holland was the end of the line, studiowise, tho’, I feel, with Love and Mercy being the ‘continuation’ rather then the wretched stuff Mike Love supervised with them.
Don’t quite get all the love here for Holland, it is certainly a decent album, but the best? Not for me. Probably makes my top 10, the Mike Love opus drags it down unfortunately.
I suspect the CD version is already manufactured and ready to sell so kind of annoying I have to wait for the inevitably delayed Vinyl version before I get my box set – but nevertheless I’m looking forward to this.
I haven’t really listened to much BBs for a couple of years but in antipation of this I have – and I will make a case for this one – their collaboration with Steve Wonder on their maligned 1985 s/t album – excellent vocals from Carl & Al:
Some nice stuff on that album, but it suffers from a horribly 80’s Steve Levine production and the presence of a dismal Culture Club reject song, Passing Friend.
