I am sure there are a few Six Music listeners on this site – the Venn diagram overlap must be quite large, and the subset of those tuning in to Radcliffe and Maconie may not be much smaller. They have a feature called the Chain, whereby a song is suggested by a listener and then other listeners are invited to send in a subsequent song that in some way links to the previous one. And so on, And on, and Ariston. It’s still going this year when I accidentally tuned in.
Having successfully completed the Return/Back AW Swap, which you graciously took part in after I suggested it, how about a new game?*
the AW Chain
Rules
To avoid a complete jamming up of the thread with endless YT clips, my rules would be these:
1. Listen to the first song**
2. Think of a great follow-up (Back On The Chain Gang would be my choice)
3. Send it as PM to the AWer who chose the last song
4. That lucky AWer gets to choose which one to post on the thread as a new main comment.
5. The baton gets passed.
6. Subcomments to the clip posted are welcome (“what a great choice”, “I would have chosen this”), but please don’t post other YT clips direct. Otherwise I’m taking my ball home***.
Footnotes
* It’s a bit quiet around here. I hope you’ll enjoy it.
** Custom dictates it has to be Fleetwood Mac::The Chain, but I don’t want to impose that on anyone.
*** I can’t actually do that, as the game will hopefully run itself.

Here’s the first song
And for the audience at home, here’s the mystery voice:
Forge Your Own Chains: D.R. Hooker
I first heard this song played loud in FOPP in Covent Garden. Like Jack Black’s customers in Hi-Fidelity, I had to have the album. I suppose I could have chosen a more well known song to start…
Over to @pawsforthought for the first reply. Can’t wait to listen.
You are gunning for the ultimate mega hamper here. You will get the whole remaining stock of Corsair Hairy Chicken Soup.
If it takes off. Will anyone want to play?
I think I might relabel it “the tumbleweed connection”.
I still don’t really understand how it’s supposed to work…
I think the idea is to private message Sal with your choice to follow on. If everyone placed a video of their choice after a video clip then it would get out of hand. Sal would choose which one to post. I’ve sent him one @salwarpe so we’ll see if that works.
Me too – Vegases at dawn…
Thanks to hubert and MC for responding. I understand that the ‘rules’ might seem a bit complicated – sorry for that.
My intention was that the person who ‘won’ the previous round (or who shared their song first) would then be the person to DM/PM. So I posted the first song, pawsforthought DMed me* a track which I approved. He then posted that track and in principle, those inspired to provide a new track should DM pawsforthought and so on.
The reason being it can then run whether I’m online or not, and without me being the final arbiter. Also, everyone can join in and be judge and jury**.
I see that pawsforthought and Rigid Digit are playing the game below. Let’s stick with this for now.
Also, when posting an approved track, please include the song title and performer(s) – YouTube is fickle in different territories. I Can see the Death in Vegas track when VPNed in the UK, but not in Germany.
*with his heavily cushioned sole
** maybe not executioner
Aha got it now.
Sorry about the lateness of my reply (I forgot I posted this to @salwarpe )
Anyway, my link goes from the D.R. Hooker album title ‘Ballads and Dirges’ to the song Dirge by Death in Vegas
(I’ll just do my Stuart Maconie bit now) Death in Vegas, off of their second album Contino Sessions, which came out in 1999. It features Dot Allison on vocals. The band were originally called Dead Elvis, until someone realised that that was a terrible name for a band.
If you can think of a link then please DM me, and I promise to check back a bit sooner this time.
It’s possible they changed their name because there was already an Irish record label called Dead Elvis Records – home of the mighty Sewing Room, among others..
We have had a couple of responses, just waiting for the first of those to post (nudges @rigid-digit )
Thanks, pawsforthought. If it’s OK with @hubert-rawlinson and @MC-Escher, we’ll wait for Rigid. If he doesn’t pull his digit out by the end of the day, then you’ve given creditable alternative paths.
So Rigid got the nod and we’re waiting for him to post it, have I got this right?
That’s it, for now.
But if there’s nothing by midnight, Germany time, I’m offering it to one of you two. By the way, if you sent me a DM/PM, I didn’t get it. It’ll have to be good to beat hubert’s.
I bet Stuart and Mark didn’t have these teething problems.
I DM’d Paws, not you. I haven’t got this, have I?
I’d got it wrong I PM’d sal not paws as I should have done.
I didn’t read the rules properly “Where we’re going, we don’t need rules”
All right there, Emmett Brown! Power down your De Lorean. Let’s get our flux capacitors in order here. Otherwise the chain will break irreparably and we’ll never get out of the early seventies.
Well, it’s all a bit of an unholy mess, but I hope it will sort itself out.
You’ve given paws a second choice for his link in the chain, cleverly leapfrogging Hubert.
You never know you might get a hamper without any linking of music the way this is going.
I was thinking of linking…
The worry is we may get a Missing Link.
The first YT clip list thread in the history of the Afterword with just two videos. Chiz will be delighted.
(welcome to the delayed response …)
Las Vegas – literal translation – The Meadows, so …
Joe Walsh – Meadows
Grasslands, pastures, lawns, herbaceous borders … all possible connections.
(and I promise to pass the baton quicker than I picked it up)
and the baton passes to @hubert-rawlinson
Grasslands, pastures, lawns, herbaceous borders … all possible connections but a tad too obvious so why go for the obvious. So…..
As the plane on the front is a Sopwith Camel here is Sopwith Camel with “Hello Hello”
Just a quick reminder if anyone is joining in.

I have won this round apparently. I’d like to thank the Academy, my agent, Hubes etc.
David Bowie intended for “Bombers” to appear on Hunky Dory but it was shelved at the last minute, only appearing originally as a promo single in the USA.
Salwarpe doesn’t mention a time limit on how long one waits for all the responses to, ahem, flood in, so @Bamber gets the nod. Hit it, Bamber!
No, I don’t. This game is a bit of an experiment, and it’s up to each selector to decide, I think.
Thanks @MC-Escher The somewhat topical number above is the first to come to mind…
I’ll pass the baton on to @Blue-Boy with a song I didn’t know by a well known artist…
OK – my suggestion for a follow up to Sweet Bird of Truth is Surprise Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox) by John Lennon for no more sophisticated reason than the common theme of a Sweet Bird. As @bamber suggests it’s not well known but I like it, as I do the album it’s from, Walls and Bridges, which I think is underrated.
Over for you for the next one – PM any ideas to me and let’s keep @salwarpe ‘s idea going. I’ll give it to Sunday.
Bless you, my Boy!
And its over to @pawsforthought for the next choice on the Chain to follow John Lennon (imagine this post in the voice of Gordon Burns – he lives up the road from us so I could ask him I suppose….)
Thanks @blue-boy I’ve gone with Step inside love by Cilla Black
It is a Lennon and McCartney write, but I was going with the Surprise Surprise link.
