So with the nights drawing in here’s something to mull over of an evening. The only clue is that they are all ‘singer songwriters’. First fully correct answer ie song title and artist wins (1 point for each) – else best score submitted by end of Wednesday and Ill reveal winner on Thursday.
The lucky winner will receive a copy of the brand new Feedback File album – and the runner up will get…. yes you’ve guessed it, cue comedy drum roll and cymbal crash.
Of course usage of the interweb is not allowed and I will trust in the renowned integrity of the Afterword community to respect that
1. He tilts their tired faces
Gently to the spoon

Takes him from the fire into the frying pan

Crumble into one another

Till I read between the lines

Me myself I got nothing to prove
7. So I turned myself to face me
But I’ve never caught a glimpse
8. I saw cotton and I saw black
Tall white mansions and little shacks
9. Even more they boys with their summer jobs
Oh my God
10. When you’re old enough to know better
When you find strange hands in your sweater
11. And you’ll wonder how you ever fathomed that you’d be content
To stay within the city limits of a small Midwestern town
12. Red hair and black leather
My favourite colour scheme
13. She’s a haunted house
And her windows are broken

I used to like your style
19. You asked me to a meeting
In a cottage in the snow
20. And all night shows
In summertime

I think I’ve got 3 of them.
Maybe I need to spend a bit more time “thinking” (code for NOT searching via Google) to get a more AW-friendly score
That is one more than me RD.
Being the Afterword I may have over-egged the difficulty – oops ! Maybe 6 points will win it Rigid
I’ve got 4. I think.
5,6,7,8.11,12,15,16 =8
3 for me too, and all grouped within 5 of the lyrics.
Yup 8 of em too, not same ones as SC
Just four for me…
Seriously impressed with 8 – Ive just reread them and had to go the answers to check a couple. Conferring with family and friends will be allowed – even Afterword ‘teams’ so long as you are prepared to hand the prize around !
I’ve already got the FF album so I don’t care that I don’t know any.
After further consideration (and still no cheating (honest!)), I now have 6 (a 100% improvement on my first attempt)
5, 6, 7, 10, 15, 16
http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t490/Rigid_Digit/mybrainhurts.jpg
I never listen to lyrics and, if I hear any, I don’t remember them.
Fascinating stuff, though.
Suddenly the Kanye thing begins to make sense ; )
I thought he just shouted ‘mutherfucking niggaz’ or something.
Actually. Now that I’ve read them, I reckon 2, 3, 7, 10, 12, 15, 16, 17.
I DO listen to lyrics, but I still can’t remember them…I only got no 16…and I bloody hate that song, I swear!
Twang even you must know 8 and 12 !!
Ahh yes I do too.
And 15 actually.
Four: 10 15 16 and 17
Seven- 1, 5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 20
Since no one else seems to have got it: I have number nine.
It’s Lulu, no?
Four: 7,8,15.16, that’s it.
Three. I’m embarrassed.
7 and 15 and, er, that’s it.
A mere five – Bargepole retires to his study with a glass of whiskey and a revolver.
Neuf a la banque
15 and 16 only.
🙁
No. 12 and 15 and that’s about it… the shame…
Everybody should get number 16 for God’s sake. Even I got 16!
I
No idea what happened then – something about a duplicate comment popped up.
Anyway, as I was just saying – surely it’s 12 that everyone will get? I did get 16 but had to struggle and drag from deep within my reluctant memory. Anyone here who doesn’t get 12 should apologise for having brought shame upon the Massive before being ritually flogged by the admins.
Well now you put it like that…it’s obvious. Not sure how I missed it on my first go. So it’s 7, 15 and 16 now.
Crikey, that’s a surprise from The Massive… because if this were ‘Pointless’ I would have steered well away from No. 15 but not that many have got it.
Actually a lot got it. I’ll shut up now.
Im retiring to the billiard room for the night – as its stands ladies and gentlemen the current leaders out on the course are Dog Face and SourCrout (assuming their answers are correct of course)
Play resumes at dawn
(Im thinking 10 correct answers may win this)
Mine are correct You have my (After) word
7, 9 and 15.
Although you got 9 wrong, I think. Or I have. Shouldn’t it be “They were boys, with their cars, summer jobs. Oh my God.”
Got five definites. 7, 12, 14, 15 and 19. There are three others that’ll come to me later with some thinking, I reckon.
Got 6 as well now.
Apologies for typo in 9 should have been :
even more they were boys with their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God
That makes it so much easier!
Re: “even more they were boys with their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God”
As luck would have it, I was listening to that song last night!
I know the author but not the song! Would that count as half a point?
That’s how I got number 11. I’d had the album on the night before
A stonking 2
Only six.
A poor performance from duco, there. Poor.
A pathetic three. 1, 15 and 16. No 3 I recognise but I’m not 100% sure.
This was great fun FF.
Another on three: 12, 15 and 17.
Glad I could be helpful Tigger !
Just one- the Dylan one, predictably.
Another 3 have a ring of familiarity, one near as dammit but nope.
Hopefully you will say they are all prog and new romantic so I can say, not my bag man.
Sorry Junior they are in the main your classic 60 and 70s singer songwriters with a smattering of 80s,90s and 00s. But you are right there is Dylan track in there (of course !)
1, 7, 9 (a rare one by the looks of it), 12,15,17. 6 out of 20, which looks fairly standard.
1,6,15 and 16=4
After cheating and looking them up I can say that I never would have got more than 7 or so, even at the top of my game. I’m a lyrics guy,but this has shown me that there are some songs I love but just don’t hear the words of.
Just 3 for me. 3, 15 and 16. None of the others look remotely familiar.
Good man for owning up to cheating Gatz (nervous looks round the room from other Afterworders).
It may be that this one now running out of steam so unless anyone wants the extra time Im going to suggest that all formal entries are submitted by end of play tomorrow (Tuesday).
Rules are only 1 entry (your first) and it goes without saying that you will of course ignore all answers already posted !
If you want you can PM me the answers but remember to give me your AW moniker.
10, 12, 15 & 16 – at least I think I’ve got them right. As I’m with Tiggerlion and never listen to lyrics (other than Joni Mitchell or Jarvis Cocker), I’m pretty happy with 4!
Ah, got one more I think – but still only five – 3,5,8,10,12
1,3,8,9,12,15 and I *think* 16 & 17. And 10 will probably pop into my head in the middle of the night.
Good game, good game.
And now 10 has indeed duly into my head. And 16 and 17 were indeed correct (hopefully usage of interweb to check results is allowed). So that makes 9 – go me.
I can confirm that Sourcrout is leading with 16 points. So Lando have you got those 9 right – if so that will be a tough one to beat methinks
Have just PM’d you what I think they are.
Some of those are amongst favourite songs, in good part because of the lyrics – number 1 being a case in point. 16, not so much.
Final reminder to get your scores in tonight (if you can beat Sourcrout that is !)
Ill confirm the winner and the answers tomorrow
++++BREAKING NEWS++++++
Lando Cakes has gone into a shock lead with 18 points
(had to consult wiki re artist name on one song – and have decided there are 2 acceptable answers)
I only got three but decided that number 15 would only be correct for the original artist rather then the better known cover. It’s a gender thing.
Yes, I’m fairly certain I know all twenty of those.
What do I win?
