Twang welcomes FeedbackFile, Tiggerlion and Steve T to the pod for a review of the cultural year, taking in music, TV, film, Twang’s ennui, old Hawkwind albums and Jenny Lewis’s strangely symmetrical mole. There is genuinely something for everyone in this bumper cast. Have great Christmas pod listeners.

Good to hear your voices.
Twang says
Hopefully hear yours soon Pencil mon ami.
Tiggerlion says
Yours was sorely missed, Pencil.
Baron Harkonnen says
Are these worth listening to Tiggs? I`ve only ever listened to the one with @SteveT talking his usual shyte.
Tiggerlion says
You haven’t listened to a podcast? Except for Steve’s? You have quite a choice.
You may as well start with this one. Pencil’s one-to-one is great value, as is the one where Blast turns up halfway through, very refreshed. Otherwise, pick your favourite band (say Little Feat or Steely Dan), genre (Jazz or Reggae, maybe), album (White or Abbey Road?) or sundry other (the one on depression is excellent).
Hours and hours of pleasure…
Twang says
No they’re all crap. Don’t bother.
Tiggerlion says
Don’t listen to him, Baron. Twang is a wonderful host who puts everyone at ease and brings out their best. If you want a perfect example, just listen to the Carolina one-to-one.
Baron Harkonnen says
I’ll give them a listen Tiggs, I’ll start with yours and the Black Cuntryboy on the latest. Hawkwind??? Why wasn’t I consulted? Seen them many times and have ALL the albums.
Tiggerlion says
Start with Carolina’s. It’s revelatory.
Neela says
Yes, the symmetrical mole… I had noticed that. Looking forward to listen to the pod tomorrow.
Twang says
And here’s a playlist of some of the team’s choices. It’s collaborative so add your picks of the year.
Kaisfatdad says
Thanks a lot to you all., Twang. That playlist will brighten my Xmas enormously.
fitterstoke says
Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast, chaps, as always….
Two points to mention:
I found that I entirely empathised with Twang’s sense of ennui this year – I have spent time surrounded by music, books and instruments but almost had a sense of paralysis and ended up listening to nothing, doing nothing…very odd, not something I’m used to…
Also, Nick Cave…if I was recommending an album for Twang to start with, it would probably be Let Love In, perhaps reflecting my perception of Twang as a rocker rather than a pop balladeer type… do tell me if I’m wrong, @Twang !! Lots of clattery, noisy music on the albums preceding, but not much after that – I do like the quieter albums, but it’s a whole different mindset from the early Bad Seeds records, which I do prefer….probably because it coincides with when I was seeing them live…I still have nightmares about The Carny at Glasgow Apollo….
SteveT says
I am adding to the playlist but don’t know where to put it if someone could assist.
Tried to avoid any duplications and managed with exception of Delines where I had to add the song in my list which is just brill:-
Edwyn Collins – It’s all about you
Santana – Breaking down the door
Chris Forsyth – Techno Pop
Jesse Malin – Friends in Florica
Buddy and Julie Miller – Everything is your fault
KoKoKo – Kitoko
Delines – Cheer up Charley
Felice Brothers – Days of the Years
Lilac Time – Cinammon Hills
Trigger Hippy – Born to be Blue

Great chat, guys, very enjoyable listen. Sounds like Feedback is suffering with FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and Twang, I am hearing the world-weary tones of Peggy Lee singing “Is That All There Is?” when you describe your generalized ennui. Maybe both of you could try a very on-trend Dopamine Fast next year, which seems to be a more extreme form of Digital Detox. Or to put it more simply, just have a spell of much less screens/social media/TV/music and pick up a book instead for a few days and you might find you come back more refreshed.
Hope you can play something festive now on the piano, Tig! I love that Lilac Time Cinammon Hills track Steve – just a pity most of the album didn’t come up to that level.
Tiggerlion says
Jingle Bells and The First Noel, as it happens!
Carolina says
Terrific!
Tiggerlion says
I’d say ‘barely recognisable’!
SteveT says
@Carolina you are right about the Lilac Time album – quite average except for that track which is just lovely.
Carolina says
It was disappointing as their last record 2015 No Sad Songs was so good.
Moose the Mooche says
Agreed. I think after 32 years of solid excellence (hur) they’re allowed a duffer, even though it’s a good album by normal standards.
Twang says
I’m sure you’re right re digital detox @carolina. I’ll add it to the long list of things I’m going to do to improve my equilibrium in 2020.
Feedback_File says
Big fan of the Lilac Time but thought this new album was very poor. @Carolina – I am now applying ointment to my FOMO and feeling better already ( the medication came in a wine shaped bottle). Reducing my digital intake is something I definitely need to do though!
Moose the Mooche says
Digital intake? Reminds me, I have to book in at the proctologist.
I’ll get me swaddling cloths.
Feedback_File says
I find that when visiting the proctologist I prefer the digital intake to be of the singular variety
Blue Boy says
Thanks Gents – enjoyed that.Much to agree with (Songs of Our Native Daughters, Derry Girls); much to disagree with (I’m still listening to and loving the Bruce record) which is exactly as it should be. I’ve added a few to the playlist.
Tiggerlion says
Just been catching up with Guilt on iplayer. Gripping plot with some black humour and great acting. One of the main characters runs a music store. The soundtrack is quite brilliant and very Afterwordy. Do you know which album Mike Garson played on before Aladdin Sane? This character does.
Moose the Mooche says
First episode of Guilt has got Can in it!
Tiggerlion says
Exactly! But I didn’t want to spoil it.
Caught up with Fleabag on a binge. Like Twang, I was unsettled by the priest but for a different reason. It’s Moriarty! He must have an wickedly intricate evil plan.
Moose the Mooche says
Worse still, it’s Paul McCartney.
(I’m remembering the utterly absurd Lennon Naked film from a few years back)
Moose the Mooche says
SPOILER ALERT: Third episode has got Giant by The The in it. And mair Can.
It’s basically a Scottish Fargo.
bigstevie says
The bloke who owns the record shop is the same actor who’s the posh husband in ‘Wild Rose’, which is another Scottish music thing, but it’s country music so beware.
Sweary Scottish (Irish) girl sings Patsy whilst playing a Gibson Hummingbird…..what’s not to like?
Moose the Mooche says
The last Scottish C & W series* I saw was John Byrne’s overlong but very enjoyable Your Cheatin’ Heart. Oooh, a mere 29 years ago.
(*kind of…)
bigstevie says
Michael Marra was in that, I think. He’s a favourite of mine. I’ve never seen it. (Makes note to self).
Anyway, Wild Rose is good fun. It was showing in the cinema in Limerick when we were there earlier in the year but we missed it. Out on DVD now.
fentonsteve says
This made the perfect soundtrack to fitting a replacement doormat. When I wasn’t swearing about cutting the wrong bits off, that is.
NigelT says
Thanks guys, a good listen! I am in Twang’s camp here – I find little time or inclination to listen to loads of new stuff, or maybe I should say seek out new stuff. Increasingly I am getting enjoyment from encountering new music at live gigs, festivals and so on, rather than via records.
I shall dig out my original vinyl copy of In Search Of Space (with the fold out cover) and listen with new ears, so thanks for that! Interesting to hear the views on Western Stars…I loved it, then went off it a bit, but now truly believe it is a masterpiece, and the film is terrific.
