Twang hands the chair over to Retropath 2 to interview Fairport Convention founder Simon Nicol. In a wide ranging interview Retro manages to avoid all the usual tiresome questions (“what was Sandy like?”, “I bet that Richard is a right laugh on a pub crawl” etc) and covers Simon’s 50 year career and many other bands as well as exploring the realities of being a musician long after you should have found a proper job.

Generally speaking, I have absolutely no interest in podcasts. Never listen to ’em. But for some reason, about 45 minutes ago, I thought I would listen to this one. And I’m glad I did. Very well done . . . sensible questions, well put, eliciting thoughtful responses.
Fairport were the first “big” band I ever saw, at Royal Festival Hall in March ’69, the lineup with Sandy Denny and Martin Lamble. I next saw them in Regents Park amphitheatre as I was passing by, and later in B’ham Town Hall and at Cropredy. Always enjoyable.
I briefly met Simon Nicol a fair few years ago at a gig they played at the Market Bosworth Battlefield festival and he was a bit grumpy with me, unlike the other band members (they all signed the set list that I was able to take from the stage). Your interview I suspect better represents the man than that random moment I interrupted him packing up his stage gear.
So anyway, well done. On the basis of this podcast and Petula’s excellent cover of Steve Winwood’s “While you see a chance” I might well sign up for the next Cropredy!
