Slumped round a table at the restaurant at the end of the universe waiting for Disaster Area’s set or The Great Prophet Zarquon – whichever is first, Mr DFB, Ganglesprocket, Kid Dynamite and NewPathsToHelicolin discuss post apocalyptic fiction.
Recent periods in history appear to throw up interest in bleak futurescapes and we are living through a particularly bounteous one at the moment. Wyndham, The Walking Dead, The Enemy, War Of the Worlds, Matinee, Threads, Survivors, Triffids, various novel recommendations and I Am Legend in all its guises are combed over as well as why we seem to like to wish the human race wiped out so regularly. How would we survive in a post apocalyptic world? Well you’ll just have to listen to find out.
We pose as many questions as we answer including “will this wind be so mighty as to lay low the mountains of the earth?” *
*Answer: No

Did yer man from the Archers turn up, just out of interest?
Lovely! I will listen in my usual state of high anxiety in case I have engaged arse rather than mouth when taking part in one of these…
Looking forward to listening tomorrow! Since recording the podcast I’ve now read The Girl With All The Gifts after you and DFB piquing my interest. Thanks for that. I really enjoyed it.
Yes sorry it got bumped to the back of the release queue but the Nick Cave n Beatles ones were more topical etc
should add Queen like disclaimer – music featured but NO REM!!!!
This is by far my favourite AW podcast yet, well done @DogFacedBoy and everyone else!
To add to the excellent recommendations, may I point all of you in the direction of the post apocalyptic sci fi poetry of Swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinsson; Aniara. Of course, with poetry it can be hit-and-miss depending on the translation, but the original Swedish poem at least is wonderful, a huge favourite of mine. And, I could add, a great way to get teenagers (or reluctant adults) interested in poetry – come for the sci fi space action, stay for the universe of poetry… Here’s a wiki-link:

It’s quite telling that my own survivor fantasies are almost completely centered around food. As I stack the shelves in the grocery store I work in I will often plan which canned goods that I’ll live on in the post apocalyptic future, how to best cook without electricity, what vegetables I’ll be able to grow in pots, etc. It cheers me up no end to plan the best solitary three course canned & dry goods feasts that I’ll be cooking after the Big Disaster! 🙂
Oh, and nice touch with the intro and outro, two Blasts in a manner of speaking!
Thanks. actually the Blaaast bit was a suggestion of @ganglesprocket ‘s that he made after I stopped tape but I always planned to use the Megadeth track as I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire’ is used in the computer game ‘Fallout 3’ or ‘Las Vegas’ as well.
Really excellent ‘cast Dave and team. Enjoyed it immensely.
Just listened! God I repeat myself a lot don’t I? Not too much actual shit spoken as feared which is lucky given that I say everything about three times…
