DFB’s shaky theory that Bob Dylan has retired from writing his own material to recording rum old Sinatra covers LPs is given a right kicking. But we do settle on the last great American songwriter standing. Your clue is….it’s Paul Simon. No. It is. Stop suggesting your pet obscure faves, it is.
So we celebrate Paul in his many different guises, list those compilation albums in full and consider the ‘also rans’ like Tom Waits, John Grant and some bloke from Spoon. The forgotten Paul n Artie reunion single, the ‘Annie Nightingale wishes it was forgotten’ faux pas and Randy Newman’s contribution to the greatest film trilogy.

A good listen – I do think The Afterword podcasts stand up next to their competitors – i.e the actual Word podcasts and “new” kids on the block Andrew Harrison and Matt Hall’s Bigmouth podcast https://audioboom.com/channel/bigmouth
What struck me on this debate was how much it focused on Lyrics rather than music – just an observation – but if that’s the priority Brian Wilson is never going to get a look in as he was a brilliant arranger, producer and harmonic sculptor but never a lyricist – if it was just about music/sound he soars ahead of Dylan, John Grant, Waits, Neil Young, Randy Newman etc – post 80s Paul Simon could duke it out with him though I’d agree – and as DFB rightly says on the last few albums it’s hard to say how much was Brian and how much was Darian and the Wondermints – and I’ve avoided his Disney and Gerschwin covers album.

This is probably the least enjoyable of this usually excellent Podcast as they’ve clearly been briefed not to talk about anything other than the new album which constrains the conversation they’d normally have – and have had with any number of songwriting legends.
Don’t avoid the Gershwin album – it’s wonderful. Haven’t heard the Disney.

John Cooper Clarke was everywhere in the late seventies. He was support act for everyone. I must have seen him umpteen times.
You missed a few ladies: Chrissie Hynde, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga…
I felt sorry for Welsh Benny. He couldn’t get a word in edgewise until near the end.
