I have just discovered the Afghan Whigs via the wonderful Radio Paradise and the track Algiers from Do The Beast.I know, I read about them in the monthlies many years ago but I never actually listened to them until now. I’m downloading ‘Do The Beast’ from emusic as we speak.
Emusic also has
Congregation
Black Love
and
Gentlemen
Where should I go next…… any thoughts.
Thanks in advance.
Apologies, I appear to have double posted. I blame my lack of experience in posting youtube clips on the new site.
Sorry.
Black Love is one of my all time favourite records. It is incredible, quite possibly the best rock album of the 90s.
So, yeah, get that first. Of the others listed, I’d go for Gentlemen before Congregation. They’re both very good records, but on Congregation they are not quite the sleazy soul grunge titans they would become. The pre-Congregation albums are okay but far from essential There is one more album, 1965, after Black Love and before Do To The Beast. If it’s available I’d get that before Congregation – the last track in particular is stunning (I’ve posted it here before – a search for “Omertà” should bring it up)
I’ve never typed “Congregation” so many times.
Thanks, noted, we’ll try that next.
Currently on youtube listening to
The Afghan Whigs @SAN MIGUEL PRIMAVERA SOUND 2012
I love the fact that no matter how closely I listened to whatever it was I listened to, I missed things…..
They are all good LPs, but I’m particularly fond of 1965.
And if they are playing near you any time soon don’t hesitate to snap up a ticket.
I’ve seen seen twice in the last six months or so, and they are still an awesome live act.
Agree with Kid D – Black Love is an awesome record.
The rest all have outstanding tracks too. Do the Beast – good though it is, is probably my least favourite of theirs. Maybe I need to play it again.
Just get all of them.
Then get The Twilight Singers.
Then The Gutter Twins.
I did, and i don’t regret a cent. Crazy, Be Sweet, Fountain and Fairfax, The Killer. Greg Dulli is one of the most underrated artists of his generation.
This:
And this:
then this, then everything else. Fantastic music.
Yes @NE1 you can’t go wrong with any of them, but ‘Black Love’ is indispensable. Here’s one of the tracks from it, live on Letterman.https://youtu.be/GKvQkofehCI
Y’know, sometimes I think I plow a lonely furrow. Runrig, Big Country, Idlewild.
I’m quietly pleased at the Greg Dulli love
Thanks for all the tips I’m enjoying what I’m hearing so far and will get Black Love next.
