It must be most upsetting for a new artist to be immediately badged as “new Dylan” (Springsteen et al), “like J.J. Cale” (Dire Straits), “Zep lite” (Def Leppard but too many to mention) etc. Who’s to say these new artists are therefore immediately inferior? First, they probably aren’t that much like the supposed original..it’s just lazy journalistic shorthand. Second, who knows, maybe they are actually worth hearing anyway.
Who are your faves who sound a bit like XXX?
I give you JaR – melodic, slightly jazzy, funky with humour…they sound a bit like Steely Dan (and even have “Peg” guitar supremo Jay Graydon spanking the frets)….
Hi Twang! Probably Dawes at the moment. They sound a bit like Jackson Browne, or indeed any other West Coast Band/Singer/Songwriter you care to name. They are fabulous though.
Yes really like them. See also Jonathan Wilson, a one man supergroup of all my favourite bands.
Ryley Walker exudes John Martyn to me, which seems a given to many a mind other than mine.
But how about this guy?
Adam Holmes (and the Embers)
Ryley Walker’s new album is all instrumentals so I am assuming that will sound less like John Martyn unless he has filled it with echoplex.
I seem to recall both Loudon Wainwright and Steve Forbert were hailed as the new Dylan and neither were nothing of the sort.
There’s quite a bit of Joni Mitchell in Laura Marling … (I can hear her grinding her teeth as we speak)
The Silver Seas – so much better than Josh Rouse…
Broken English sounded nothing like the Stones…
On Opposite Day !
