I just twigged there’s a massive clue to this in his sleevenotes, where he says “the choices I make lie somewhere in between [the Heaven & Earth discs]”. Scamp.
Good album, isn’t it? Too much to take in properly yet, but I like what I’ve heard.
I haven’t read the notes yet. I’ve only had time to listen through once to the Heaven & Earth discs (in three sittings, not ideal), and yes, I like what I’ve heard but there’s a lot to take in. Seems more of the same as what we got with The Epic, which to me is a very good thing.
There is indeed – you should see a section which looks corrugated, a bit sealed, then a bit opened, then a bit sealed, etc. – carefully insert a not too sharp object into one of the opened bits and slice, and your disc should fall out (I’m referring to the CD version, I think the LP has a fifth disc with this on it).
I think the word you’re looking for is ‘perforated’.
Yep, each side of the middle section is perforated, just pick one and go for it, carefully. There’s a bit of paper in there too. My disc needed a little clean as there were some specks of card stuck to it.
As Eric Morecambe famously described jazz music as “all the right notes, and in the right order, but with a load of wrong notes smuggled in there too”, it was inevitable there would eventually be a whole cds worth of extra notes.
“Double album of jazz? With an extra free cd?
(*turns to camera 2*) Nice!”
Never heard of Kamasi W before this. Tenor saxophone, sounds right up my street, bet it’s got lots of catchy tunes and everything and a hidden disc as well!
ps Moose – what’s with this “Bob Harris-friendly” guff? He is No3 on my Up Against The Wall list…
I like his stuff without choirs. Which makes for a couple of single albums and an EP. Unless someone tells me he has stopped using ’em. Put me right off the first one and I haven’t dared go back.
But, whilst I have Tiggs attention, the new Sons of Kemet? I love the 2015 one, the tuba and the twin drummers coming over all N’Awlins marching band on strong jazz cigarettes. Is the new one similar: I am afeard it has lots of talking in rhyme all over the place. Meringue?
Sons Of Kemet…. the music’s alright, but the rapping is terrible. Honestly, it is at the level of the obligatory rap verses on early 90s indie dance records. You know, the bits you had to wade through to get to the good stuff on Transglobal Underground LPs.
It’s not rapping, it’s ecstatic, celebratory vocal proclamation and it’s only on a few tracks. Remember, this is Jazz not Hip Hop. The brass parping and kalaedoscopic percussion more than compensate.
A review down here said good songs, good playing but overcooked with too many musicians and strings OTT with Kamasi a much poorer arranger than player.
Well that’s another one chalked up to my ‘thank goodness for the Afterword’ list. Been listening to this all afternoon (after the footie, anyway) and it’s great. Can’t think of any other way I would have heard about this other than here.
Just got my copy – the folk at the record shop seemed oblivious to the ‘extra’.
Haven’t felt like a member of a secret club like this since Bazooka Joe recruited me!
Wait, what?
It’s true! Have a look at the middle panel with a sharp knife handy.
Yep, found it! Apparently the 4LP has a hidden fifth disc too. Amazing.

Can’t wait to hear the secret disc!
Parp!🎷
Right, before I start attacking it with a knife, is there an actual disc in the middle panel?

….such nimble fingers….
I’m in!!

Puzzled of Pouzolles here – honestly I have no idea what this is all about. Honestly
What part is confusing you, Lodes? The detailed descriptions or the photograph?
The references to a non-Bob Harris-friendly type musician. I mean do you know what site this is?
Isn’t that everyone that doesn’t wear a cowboy hat?

You’ve got an Up Against the Wall list?
….okay….
*checks exit routes*
The thing that freaks me out is that The Epic was released three years ago. Fuck me! Feels like three weeks.
Fantastic – this is how hidden tracks should be done! Still waiting for my copy to arrive though…
Two triple CDs and a slightly-shorter single CD in 3 years.
Now there’s someone on a creative streak.

This is jaaaaam hot!
Now catch me IF you CAN ’cause I’m the England man!
etc
I feared as much. Or as bad as the “toasting” aka “limp white breading” demonstrated by Zion Train at Bearded Theory….

Reaction ?
Couldn’t disagree more. No word on the production? it sounds totally immaculate.
You could level that criticism at The Epic. I think the big sound is just his thing. If you liked that one, you’ll like this one.
Truly wonderful!! Can’t remember the last time an artist did something like this, if ever.
I highly recommend the video he recently released, a juicy jazz ode to 90s arcade game Street Fighter 2.

Boring? My arse.
Top tip!I was fiddling with that bit in the middle thinking it was too thick – then just assumed it was very sturdy…
As to the album sounds great, not sure that there might be a bit too much here though – and now Ive got more!
I’m just amazed he persuaded Tom Jones to sing for him.
