I love Deguelo! It’s rare to see it even mentioned. The weird production is mind blowing, I think they must have got a harmoniser box & used it on everything. Trippy !
I think he was just being (very unusually) bashful.
This album, and a few scattered tracks from others that were recorded around the same time, are all anyone really needs from Mr. Watson in his “Gangster of Love” funk persona. Interesting that apart from the brass/reed instruments and the drums, absolutely everything else on the record is Johnny’s work.
He was a veteran of ’50s R ‘n B who reinvented himself constantly, to keep abreast of the times. He sustained a successful 54-year performing career and finally died aged 61 in 1996, while on tour in Japan.
I just wanted to say, how touching that version is, and how nice it is to see their shared Christian values that prevent Tommy from lumping Bobby as he he usually does in their hilarious sketches. Nothing so amusing as visible threats of physical violence.
The album is an absolute belter. Michael Head is a genius. I strongly suspect a smaller advance would have probably helped their career but the music would not have been so confident.
It’d like to thank you all for NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING …. nothing at all.
A song I heard only this morning, listening to Laurie Anderson on Desert Island Discs podcast. Tthe life of Viletta Parra seems well lived and worth giving thanks for
Here’s a band that doesn’t get mentioned on this board every day: Alberto y lost trios paranoias.
This song, “Thank You”, was featured on the Heads Down, No Nonsense, Mindless Boogie 4-track EP. The EP also featured an almost identical song, where the word “Thank” was replaced by a very rude word.
Ignoring that you said that Talking Heads’ similarly titled Thank You For Sending Me An Angel is a bit strong, this thread is a good excuse to post Scottish popsters Friends Again with Thank You For Being An Angel.
I have this EP somewhere in a storage room, one of the few bits of vinyl that has survived too many house moves.
The Scaffold?
Andrew Gold?
But, on balance, I think I’m going to suggest Dido.
How about this?
That is a stunningly wonderful clip of a great song , @Bamber.
Magazine did a rather decent cover version …
If you don’t balk at the idea of Oz country music circa 1969, sung by an indigenous boxer, this might do.
Andrew Gold(en Girls)
As famously used on the fake Yorkshire Ripper tape.
How about the Steven Wilson’s cover of Alanis….
Or if you are being grateful for receiving some cured meats, there’s always George….
Thank you, Jesus by the Holmes Brothers
In case you feel like testifyin’…
Great choice. I love the sleazy ZZ Top version.
Deguelo is a brilliant and much overlooked album.

Yes it’s a one off. They never did anything like it before or since. And the Lone Wolf Horns! Brilliant.
Bruce covered “I’m bad, I’m nationwide” occasionally.
That’s my favourite track on it. I really dig the funky clavinet, I think that was played by Dusty?
Yes he did the keyboards. There was a brilliant documentary about the Top on Netflix a while ago but sadly it’s gone now.
To thank the woman you love, in slightly cheesy ’70s funk style, Johnny “Guitar” Watson has the song you need.
That is a really wonderful track @Mike_H. What a wonderful groove.
But Johnny’s desire to do strange things that he can’t talk about in public is a tad unsettling.
I think he was just being (very unusually) bashful.

Look no further than Messrs Cannon and Ball.

Depending on how close you are to the person, you could do worse than go with Carly Simon and Ben Taylor – I Can’t Thank You Enough
Why not do it in a latino way?
I suspect this is what you’re looking for.
That was going to be mine what a great tune.
Do you know their advance was by far the biggest in history? £250,000
The album is an absolute belter. Michael Head is a genius. I strongly suspect a smaller advance would have probably helped their career but the music would not have been so confident.
A variation on the theme…
The lovely Kirsty’s Kinks Kover.
I’ve never been entirely certain just how thankful he really was.
Natalie Merchant is kind and generous
That is a wonderful song.
You can’t really beat the peerless charm of The Shirelles:
Although the cheek of Chumbawamba comes close – not sure how much your friend would appreciate their ‘gratitude’.
“ The only words I said today are beer and thank you”
The lugubrious Bill Callahan at his finest
Here’s a very catchy song thanking an entire city. GRAZIE ROMA by Antonello Venditti.
And now, a Finno- Swedish band called Kiitos för allting, which means THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, with a song entitled TACK SOM FAN.
Very roughly translated the song title means THANKS A FOCKING LOT.
I cannot get enough of the version on Kicking Television… aka my favourite live album.

As featured on BBC R4’s Saturday Live, I Wanna Thank You by The Enchanters.
Perhaps not the vibe you’re after, but William DeVaughn is thankful for what he’s got.
Not sure if this fits the vibe, but it popped into my head – along with the visuals.
Crikey, how could I have forgotten this…?
@tiggerlion

I have the Friends Again EP on vinyl. A wonderful slice of peak Sound of Young Scotland.
Thank you for all the thank yous. I’m particularly taken by the Natalie Merchant that is new to me. I think it hits the right gone perfectly.
Delighted to introduce you to it; its a lovely song.
Now Be Thankful
