I live very close to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal – I saw this year’s first brood of ducklings yesterday. Some of the resident ducks never left this winter.
The geese and swans have started arriving too. The best way to tell that summer had arrived is when the geese start attacking passers-by who walk too close to their nests (serves the buggers right for nesting so close to the towpath).
saw my first swallow on Sunday, and a martin the day before.
Hilliard Ensemble
Seen a few in the last fortnight, but ‘ours’ aren’t back yet (the ones which nest in our neighbour’s garage and outbuilding).
Seen my first (UK) Barn Swallow today, the Skylarks over the house have been deafening, the Pied Wagtails and Dunnocks are nesting, all is cool!

Huge gangs of Sandpipers pootling around the water’s edge at St Anne’s last Thursday. Lovely.
Seasonally this is a bit premature – but it does speak of swallows:
Roy Harper – On Summer Day
A song like that is why I love Roy.
Thank you all, what a splendid collection of listens to welcome them back from southern climes.
We’re still waiting for our swallows and martins up here in the North East – it’s chiffchaffs that really mark the change in the season for me.
