That’s lovely. I’m (1) not American and (2) wholly uninterested in baseball, but even I find that speech very moving.
And Field of Dreams is a terrific film. I’ve only got to hear Kevin Costner start saying “Dad…”, with his family on the porch, the music swelling up, and that beautiful evening light, and I’m tearing up. Every single time.
Fabulous actor. I remember him in an episode of Homicide Life on the Streets playing the father of a young man who has murdered a maid, and trying to protect him from justice. It ends with Jones quoting the Lonseome Death of Hattie Carroll –
In the courtroom of honour, the judge pounded his gavel
To show that all’s equal and that the courts are on the level
And that the strings in the books ain’t pulled and persuaded
And that even the nobles get properly handled
Once that the cops have chased after and caught ’em
And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom
Can’t find the video online but Jones’ understated but powerful delivery has stayed with me.
Got to see him do Shakespeare a few years back. An immense presence, and lightness of touch in his acting, as well as that amazing voice.
Also, this:
Thanks @TrypF. That was wonderful.
His long speech from Field of Dreams is so famous they filmed then current ballplayers reciting it in relay as a tribute to the sport and it’s fans.

I watched it about a year after my dad passed away, result was uncontrollable sobbing, probably for the first time
Yes me too. Unfortunately it is now unwatchable for that very reason
There’s a few things about the US I miss, and baseball is one of them.
MLB at Nats Park, or the WV Miners in Fayetteville. It’s America at its most idealized version of itself.
