Are there any other fans of Talking Pictures TV on here?
The channel celebrates classic and rare films from the 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.
It’s great to see films I haven’t watched in ages, such as Hell is a City, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, and The Long Memory.
But what I really like is taking a punt on films I’ve never seen before which turn out to be a treat, such as Jigsaw, a murder mystery starring Jack Warner.
Seeing familiar faces at different stages of the career is another fascination for me. Besides Warner, Stanley Baker, John Mills, and a host of 70s sitcom favourites at the start of their careers, Talking Pictures has shown Never Let Go, with Peter Sellers as a nasty gangster. He’s really convincing and you wonder what his career would have been like if he’d been offered more serious roles.
Never Let Go has some lovely location shots (lost London pubs), another reason I like the channel. Jigsaw features 60s Brighton and in a Hell is a City, you can see a pre-Arndale Centre Manchester with the old railway station still in use.
Some of the films are rare for a reason, however. The Frank Randle/Old Mother Riley ‘comedies’ don’t stand up well. Even the Laurel and Hardy shorts are not as funny as I remember as a kid and some other big name films are duds.
But good on yer Talking Pictures!
