Ok, I didn’t go, but I could have. And if the IWTSHM is fair play here now, well maybe I should have.
I know we’re all getting on, but, jeez, I still have my own ears, harrumph, harrumph…..
Thank you, I usually ignore any post with obscure/too many abbreviations but for some reason this one piqued my interest. Liked the Baz review, sounded like a good time.
Indeed. And it was a lovely review. It just offended the music snob part of my lone groovery, which is my bad. I still have this tainted idea we are all ultra cool arbiters of a gritty urban hipsterdom. Grey haired denizens of a fading dystopia, with one doc marten in the wasteland of post punk relentlessness, the other in a retroverse of bebop, dub and gaelitronica. Just me, then.
(What’s that? Soup? What flavour? Anything but minestrone, as the bits get caught in my denture and stuck in the straw.)
Many years ago now, I got freebies to see Boyzone. Someone I knew was in the production team and it was an excuse to catch up. However it was great fun, with some amazingly silly staging including flying over the audience. I think I’d seen them at the Fleadh in the early years of their career. Does this make me a fan?!?
In future, if in doubt, go. At least you have a story to tell.
I’m just packing for the amber weather warning trenches at Bearded Theory; that’ll be a story to tell. My daughter declined my return of compliment, on hearing the Poundshop Boys were playing (as below):
I love their song ‘UK Grim’. I also read an interview with the shouty one in The Idler (very Afterword!) and he seemed like he has his head screwed on. If it’s horrible weather there, then that’s probably their next album material sorted.
I got ‘taken’ to see Take That on their Circus tour a good while ago now, but after their initial reunion.
All the men in our party had apparently been dragged along against their will and anticipated spending as much time as possible at the bar.
We couldn’t have been more wrong.
Knowing the words to all the songs, ridiculously elaborate and impressive staging and being surrounded women who were there simply for the joy of a good sing and dance made for a compelling night out.
It immediately entered my top 5 gigs (shows?) attended and hasn’t come close to being dislodged since.
Learned a big lesson that night. If offered a chance to go somewhere. Go.
You know, old white male, guitar based rock, once made some good records a long time ago but we keep the faith despite repeatedly being disappointed. We buy the same old classics again and again and continue to be completists. Taylor Swift is no good because she is a she who makes girly pop and wears a leotard but is not Kate Bush. Something like that.
Can we have more reviews of concerts we haven’t been to? I think I would excel at that, as I haven’t been to a major musical event since (checks online) 2004.
Edit – apart from 2018, when very kind friends took me to see Dreadzone and Kylie.
If it helps, I didn’t see Henge last night at Bearded Theory. I arrived and put my tent up, in a quaggy field, had a beer and a chat with @kid-dynamite, watched Amy Thatcher & Francesca Knowles and then drove home for my tea and a warm bed. Hopefully the Kid will have been to see Henge as I may have to later pretend I did………
Back to the fray today, but unlikely to sleep over until Friday. Weather willing.
I suspect (but cannot prove – obvs) that our collective diluting of the pool of universal adoration he normally gets in Ireland may have had something to do with his recently cancelling three European shows
I did indeed see Henge! Marvellous stuff, kind of what happens when the Greek Orthodox Church meets 70s kids sci-fi TV.
Don’t think I saw you again after NMA? Hope the rest of your festy was good. We had a good time. Blazing sun would have been better but hey. We did bail out on Sunday afternoon in a plan to avoid the expected Monday morning chaos, and ended up needing to get towed out of the car park anyway….

IWTSHM?

I Write The Songs Hit Maker I assume. This may be due to my review of the Baz Manilow gig on here

Some fine NME style phrases in there, retro – the manifesto of the New Musical Elderly, perhaps?
And there’s enough material there for about four fashionably ripped/torn t-shirts…🙂
fitterstoke says
New Afterword strap line:
“Grey haired denizens of a fading dystopia”
Or, even better:
“ultra cool arbiters of a gritty urban hipsterdom”
If that doesn’t get “the kids” flocking to sign up, I don’t know what will…
retropath2 says
Remember the kids are just old people waiting to happen!
Vulpes Vulpes says
I would have gone. If she invites you again, give her my number!
seanioio says
You should have gone. New experiences broaden the mind and all that. Plus they are fantastically entertaining live

(I don’t like the Saturday Night at the Palladium angle that is there sometimes, but…)
Mr Barlow has written some truly excellent songs.
And he is a good singer too.
(I don’t rate ‘the other two’).
OK I’ll run away now.
Can’t get further than Japan, I suppose 😉

Have you listened to the Big Special album? It’s of a similar vein & is superb!

Starting a whole thread about a band you don’t like. Slow day?

Now, about that Radiohead lot, wotta moaning shower of pretentious little twerps they are.

Diddley Farquar says
This is wise. An Afterword approved type of performer is more likely to disappoint than one a partner or child might choose.
fitterstoke says
I may have asked this before, but: what is “Afterword approved”, these days? Does Taylor Swift disappoint?
Diddley Farquar says

Oh, right…Van and Broooooce and Dylan, then…
TBH, I thought Ms Swift was “Afterword approved” these days, but I may have misread the memo.

Correct

I’d have gone. Love a bit of the That. I’ve said it before – songs this good (and they have a few) remind me of the Bee Gees – a high benchmark.

I own no other TT*, but Back For Good is in contention for my DID list.
(*) I did once win a Mark Owen CD in a raffle.
fentonsteve says
Edith: or was it by Jason Orange? It had a green cover and I often see it in chazzas.
Freddy Steady says
Pretty sure that sounds like Green Man by little Mark Owen. A single off it, Clementine, was ace!
