Three songs recorded by a ‘Power Quartet’ in the summer of 1966, for a possible single release, at the same time as Cream formed – Duffy Power (voc/harp), John McLughlin (gtr), Jack Bruce (bs), Ginger Baker (dr). None were released at the time, though these versions of ‘Little Boy Blue’ and ‘Mary Open the Door’ did appear as non-lead tracks on a French EP (on Decca, curiously) in 1967. McLaughlin in this period was playing exclusively chord-based stuff – though fascinating chords, and exhilarating vamping – rather than the dizzying fusion solo style he developed from 1970 onwards. An interesting ‘sliding doors’ moment – what if a UK single had appeared before the first Cream single and taken off…?
