Who’s heard of The Ace Of Cups? Well, they opened for Jimi Hendrix the week after he played Monterey, and in an interview with Melody Maker shortly after he said they had some “groovy sounds”.
They’re getting together to record their first album 50 years later. They couldn’t get a record deal back then. Why? Because the (male) record execs assumed they’d get pregnant and have babies (which they did). And yet, as they say in this clip, all the boys in bands they knew were becoming fathers, but their partners stayed home. As it was. As it is.
Anyway, I think this is a great story.
And I have some personal interest – my wife was a member of an all-girl group in NZ back in the day (late 70s) – formed because all the members’ boyfriends were musicians!
AFAIK there were no all-girl bands in the sixties that got recorded (plenty of singers though) – then in the 70s came Fanny, the Slits, and in the 80s The Go-Gos.
Not many actual bands that stayed together though.
