Everyone here is a fan of the Get Funky hitmakers, aren’t they? That trademark chug, jangle and harmonising has been making us nicer people since 1990 or so. But what does one reach for in the long wait between Teenage Fanclub records and dates? Well, try this vaguely chronological playlist for size. Everything flows; you get the bands who influenced them and the acts they influenced; you get some related turns and covers; plus you get curveballs like Queen, the Alan Parsons Project and Steve Miller Band. I might well have posted this here before, in which case: sorry. But you can never have too much of this type of music, so please let me know of anything else that might fit in.
Let’s call it Fanclubesque
Is there a technical term for the sort of song that gets most of its business done in the first verse, often at a chugging pace, with liberal use of the jangly Needles And Pins riff, and elegant little drum pick-ups? If there is a chorus it’s often more a glorified bridge or slightly altered second verse, definitely not a singalong. The title is often buried at the end of the verses, and then everything rides out on extra layers of guitar.
Well, I don’t know what you’d call it, but I like it. And as Bellshill’s finest are past masters of the form, let’s all it Fanclubesque. Here’s a playlist of some I’ve liked over the years, showing that even late-period Bruce Springsteen and Nick Lowe are not immune to the charms of this song structure. Are there any you’d add to the list? And has anyone realistically said what this sort of song actually is?
Melodic sunshine
Great piece about the wholly wonderful Joe McAlinden. Give his Linden albums a listen. They are the sound of a summer we never had.
Nearly. Nearly….
It’s nearly ‘home-time’. The sun has been belting down all day and I can’ t wait to get out in the garden, crack open the Shiraz and tuck into a massive ham and turkey salad. However, I need some musical accompaniment. I’m leaning towards loads of upbeat songs with jangly guitars and great harmonies. So, whatcha got? I’ll start us off with the heavenly Fannies. Have a great weekend everyone.
