I was chatting to another member of the Massive last night about this so I thought I’d see what others think. After my moan about the sound quality for Squeeze’s gig at the Albert Hall, we were wondering whether it’s important to have a clear view of the stage as well as good sound. We were at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall where the stalls are only gently raked upwards. Right in the centre of the front row was a very tall (6’4″ or 6’5″ I think – he’ll correct me if I’m wrong), broad bald feller and, particularly when he took to his feet (and he was standing for at least half the gig) the people in the 2 rows behind him must have been really struggling to see, especially as the people either side of him were both over 6′. Fortunately, I was fine as I was standing next to him and had an absolutely perfect audio-visual experience. Bellowhead’s sound people did a superb job and every instrument was audible and the whole sound was well-balanced. The band were superb. I think it was my gig of the year, but I might not have enjoyed it quite so much if » Continue Reading.
Can I have my money back?
My wife and I walked out of the Squeeze gig at the Albert Hall last night after just under an hour because the sound was unbearable. We had paid £95 each for our seats which were in the perfect spot in the stalls looking straight down the hall from just behind the sound desk, we love Squeeze and have seen them many times, it was the band’s 50th anniversary tour, I’d read the reviews of previous shows and was fully expecting to have a great evening. But the sound was so terrible we both wanted to leave. How can that happen? I’m used to the sound needing to be rebalanced early in a gig and I know that the Albert Hall, even after it’s big upgrade a few years ago, can be a bit tricky but I’ve been to plenty of shows with good sound there. Difford and Tilbrook sounded very good when they joined Richard Thompson and played 3 Squeeze songs there in June. But that was with Richard Thompson’s band and sound crew. Last night, when they came on, only the drums were clearly audible, everything else merged into a sludgy mush. Even Tilbrook’s guitar when he took » Continue Reading.
ATM – TV through Hifi speakers
Can anyone tell if it is possible to improve my TV sound by connecting the set to my CD player and playing through my speakers? The CD player is a cheap Sony mini system, no separate amp, with an audio in port on the front; the television is a fairly new LG with various ports on the rear.
I’m a bit of a dunce about electronics and any advice would be welcome.
