World’s Oldest Football Record
Hi, I am a first time poster but a long time record collector and thought I would kick off my account on TAW with a question. Does anyone here have an older football (soccer) related record? The reason I ask is because I would love to know if one exists older than the one I found a few years ago and just showing the disc here may interest other collectors to get in touch. I found it in an auction lot a couple of years ago and it dates from 1907. The audio on the link is an Englishman doing the commentary on a Scottish match on a one sided 78 that was reproduced in German 115 years ago! Curious facts include Celtic referred to as The Celts on the label and that radio football commentary didn’t start until 20 years later. I hope someone has a similar old football related record and even though I have quite a few I am always pleased to see others I don’t have.
Records, records, records.
Just watched this on Talking Pictures, I certainly recognise, if not the people, the traits they exhibit.
Record Fairs – any point nowadays?
Having visited two record fairs in Leeds over the past few weekends, I have come to the realisation that they are fairly pointless these days. My belief was always that the entire point of record fairs was to pick up a bargain or something rare. Nowadays, fairs are just expensive record shops. Just about every record I picked out over the last few weeks, I could get cheaper online. The cheap records are usually in absolute rubbish condition, the decent stuff in good condition is basically the Discogs med price and the rare stuff is ultra-expensive. I had a chat with one of the regular sellers and, to be fair to him, he said that his margins are so tight that when he gives a small discount to people buying more than four records at one time, it often wipes out his profit. The only positive is one seller, who has a big collection of new, non-mainstream records. He clearly picks up bulk stock – presumably excess stock from HMV or record labels needing warehouse space. He sells his new records at between £12 and £20, so if you do find anything you didn’t pick up when released, you can » Continue Reading.
How much music have you got?
I’m specifically interested in your physical collection – albums and singles
I’m at the stage now where I probably have enough but I can’t stop snapping up bargains especially cds and I was curious about where I stand in comparison to other Afterworders
I have 485 Lps, 675 7″‘singles, 160 12″ singles 600 cd albums 115 cd singles 40 cassette albums
How about you?
Record Store Day 2017 – The Before Thread
As I type, Record Store Day 2017 is a mere ten sleeps away. I’d like to declare the what-are-you-going-to-get thread OPEN! So, what is everyone interest in?
[Please note: this thread is an RSD-grump-free zone]
What does it mean if a vinyl is warped?!
I keep reading about warped, and just this week I sold some vinyls on eBay and somebody has informed me the record they bought from me is warped. The record in question had never been played or left the sleeve in 20 years, so I don’t know if that is what caused it. What does warped mean and how can you tell when your record is indeed, warped?!
The new five pound note
You can totally play records with them. Sounds terrible, and I need a bit of practise, but still… pretty cool, eh?
Pye Records “secret red” vinyl in the 1970s
I follow a blog called Copycat Cover Records, and recently they’ve been posting about certain budget label releases pressed by Pye that in strong light appear translucent, usually red or dark pink in colour. I first noticed this myself when cleaning a recent car boot Kinks double (Spotlight On The Kinks, PRT – SPOT 1009), which in the photo here looks purple, but in reality is a dark, blood red. Since then I’ve been noticing this effect in loads of records, all listed as manufactured or distributed by Pye throughout the 1970s. I presume this has something to do with the oil crisis, but a search of the internets has been fruitless. So really this is a long-winded way of asking: what’s up with that? I’m sure someone at the Afterword has the answer – is it you?

So how are we all cleaning our records these days..?
I now have a critical mass of second-hand stuff that I really need to spruce up in order to enjoy. I’ve seen the wood glue videos, but I don’t want wood glue near my turntable.
This looks great… but it’s too expensive.
What’s everyone else doing?
